Ma vivi e trapassati non potrebbero convivere? A chiederselo, prima che lo faccia lo spettatore, è Jenna Ortega;  una brillante fra le new entry in questa sorta di azzardata rivisitazione del BEETLEJUICE di addirittura trentasei anni or sono... Tim Burton non sfigura, ma solo a tratti,  anche perché come sempre riesce a privilegiare i suoi attori. Basta osservare come a 8 anni dal suo penultimo, ancora notevole MISS PEREGRINE - LA CASA DAI RAGAZZI SPECIALI , prima di rifugiarsi fra le serie metta ancora in fila Michael Keaton, Wainona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Catherine O’Hara, Monica Bellucci e Willem Dafoe.Tutti che sollecitano la nostra ammirazione; non sempre, la nostra commozione.

Dietro le loro spalle rimane Tim Burton, il visionario gotico del cinema moderno, un po’ normalizzato dalla critica e dimenticato dal pubblico dopo il disneyano ALICE NEL PAESE DELLE MERAVIGLIE (2010), o  l’impersonale BIG EYES (2014). Ma pur sempre il cineasta per eccellenza della fede nelle fiabe, nella sublime diversità e fragilità di BATMAN (1989), l’esilarante sfrontatezza politica di MARS ATTACK (1996), la tenerezza nel fantastico delirante di SLEEPY HOLLOW (1999) e SWEENY TODD (2007). Il cinema che ha contato ci invita a non dimenticare.

 Impossibile allora ignorare l’energia straordinaria con la quale il regista riesce a penetrare nello spazio di libertà assoluta che gli spalanca il  fantastico. Michael Keaton sembra rinascere, grazie al ruolo d'irsuto diavolo, nei tratti squadrati della sua divisa . Sono piuttosto le donne a risaltare, ritrovando i personaggi della famiglia Deetz,  grazie alla presenza di Catherine O'Hara e Winona Rider. Solo che la mitica Lydia Deetz di allora aveva 17 anni; ora ne ha più di 50, impersonando l' animatrice infagottata in vesti gotiche di un talk -show di spiritismo. Mentre la sorprendente adolescente Jenna Ortega  riprendere il ruolo...

Tim Burton traduce allora tutti questi rinvii affrontando quanto gli riesce ancora di meglio. Gli sfondi concreti, gli ambienti dall'apparenza autentica. Un'ambientazione, le musiche che dimostrino quanto siano meglio i vecchi trucchi, l'emozione provocata dall'usato piuttosto che l'invasione sempre più scontata del digitale. Basta, forse, perché BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE serva a ricordarci quanto grande sarebbe diventato Tim Burton .

Asking this question, before the viewer does, is Jenna Ortega; a brilliant among the new entries in this sort of daring retelling of BEETLEJUICE from even thirty-six years ago... Tim Burton does not disfigure, but only at times, partly because as always he manages to privilege his actors. It is enough to observe how eight years after his penultimate, still remarkable MISS PEREGRINE - THE HOUSE OF THE SPECIAL KIDS , before taking refuge among the series he still lines up Michael Keaton, Wainona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Catherine O'Hara, Monica Bellucci and Willem Dafoe.All of whom solicit our admiration; not always, our commotion.

Behind their backs remains Tim Burton, the gothic visionary of modern cinema, somewhat normalized by critics and forgotten by audiences after the Disney-esque ALICE IN THE COUNTRY OF WONDERS (2010), or the impersonal BIG EYES (2014). But still the quintessential filmmaker of faith in fairy tales, in the sublime diversity and fragility of BATMAN (1989), the hilarious political chutzpah of MARS ATTACK (1996), the tenderness in the delirious fantasy of SLEEPY HOLLOW (1999) and SWEENY TODD (2007). The cinema that mattered invites us not to forget.

 Impossible then to ignore the extraordinary energy with which the director manages to penetrate the space of absolute freedom that the fantastic opens up to him. Michael Keaton seems to be reborn, thanks to the role of the hirsute devil, in the square features of his uniform . Rather, it is the women who stand out, rediscovering the characters of the Deetz family, thanks to the presence of Catherine O'Hara and Winona Rider. Only that the legendary Lydia Deetz of that time was 17; now she is more than 50, impersonating the 'gothic-clad entertainer of a talk -show about spiritualism. While striking teenager Jenna Ortega reprises the role...

Tim Burton then translates all these referrals by tackling what he still does best. The concrete backgrounds, the authentic-looking environments. A setting, the music that proves how much better the old tricks, the emotion provoked by the used rather than the increasingly predictable invasion of the digital. It is enough, perhaps, for BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE to serve as a reminder of how great Tim Burton would have become .
