FORMULA PER UN DELITTO (MURDER BY NUMBERS)

di Barbet Schroeder, con Sandra Bullock, Ben Chaplin, Ryan Gosling, Michael Pitt

TSI 2 dal 22.06.2025

Coincidenze.

Coincidences. One of the merits of FORMULA PER UN DELITTO lies in its craftsmanship. The cut of the cinematography by a great Luciano Tovoli guarantees a beautiful unity of style; the final sequences have the same dizzying grain as those of the Hitchcock of INTRIGO INTERNAZIONALE. And the theme of Barbet Schroeder’s film, inspired by a news story from 1920 and since then not exactly unusual (two teenagers decide on a dare to commit a perfect crime), is the same as that of a well-known one by the master of suspense, THE STRING.

But the reference stops at this premise. FORMULA FOR A MURDER belongs to those detective stories in which the decision is made to reveal the identity of the culprit right from the start. A procedure like any other: provided it is carried out with impeccable consequence, starting with the script. Unravelling the mechanics of a mystery that has already been revealed: but then, with a precision that leaves nothing to chance. A coldness that does not give in to emotion, an almost scientific procedure that replaces the fascination of analysis with that of an unknown that no longer exists. The perfect film, in short: to dismantle the illusion of the perfect crime.

In this MURDER BY NUMBERS (at Cannes this year), the coherence of the block is called into question by the characteristics, albeit unusual and stimulating, of a film that is in other respects predictable: An investigation within three genres of different atmospheres, such as the melodramatic psychologism, the teen movie and, of course, the detective story. The result is a film that is sophisticated, ambitious and perhaps even refined: but, just in the image of that Sandra Bullock who conducts the investigation, also bewildered.
