It had been eight years since Kathryn Bigelow had directed a film. Yet, as her latest film A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE proves, she has done so with flying colours. She was the first woman to receive an Oscar for Best Director for the splendid THE HURT LOCKER in 2008, the first time that thousands of American voters had favoured modesty over the $150 million budget of James Cameron’s AVATAR. It was also the first real American film about Iraq…
How long did it take for a woman to make a film that was not about war, but rather “on” war, or better still, “from” war?
Kathryn Bigelow, a filmmaker of great talent but little presence in the film world, had already hinted at her concerns after the remarkable but now distant success of POINT BREAK. A rampant eroticism (heterosexual, but largely homosexual) in the story of a young FBI agent who infiltrates the Los Angeles surf scene to dismantle a gang of robbers. The quality of her vision will be unprecedented in many ways.
But now war films are no longer those of John Wayne and Sam Fuller, of the metaphysical realism of PLATOON, of the sensational deadly spectacle of APOCALYPSE NOW. Nor are they of the cultural and aristocratic indignation of Stanley Kubrick’s PATHS OF GLORY. Or of FULL METAL JACKET (“Each of us, whether we like it or not, is partly fascinated by violence.
Man is the most remorseless killer who has ever lived on earth. And that fascination shows that we are not so different from our most distant ancestors. A turning point in Terrence Malick’s absolute masterpiece, THE THIN RED LINE, seen as the unnatural act that deprived man of paradise on earth.
A HOUSE OF DYAMITE is an imperfect film, but one that benefits from the precious traces left behind among the shards of those masterpieces. No one claims responsibility for the origins of that nuclear missile, which takes just nineteen minutes to reach Chicago and bring about the apocalypse. Kathryn Bigelow needs less than two hours; let’s hope that’s enough.
