______________________________________________________________________________________

James Cameron belongs to the inner circle (the Kubrick, Malick, Cimino) of great filmmakers who have shot relatively little. More than once he reflected before returning to discover the world through the eye of the camera. From The Terminator (1984) to this Avatar - The Way of Water (2022) there are eight feature films completed by Cameron. His first Avatar, from 2009, is still the most profitable film in the history of cinema (2.9 billion dollars). As well as being rewarded with three Oscars, Best Cinematography, Set Design and Special Effects.

Now, the lucky, or shrewd producers (Disney, who bought Fox) are monitoring the astounding box-office results of Avatar 2, which cost $350 million, currently at $3 billion. Before giving the go-ahead to the continuation of a challenge that has now become family only. After the imponderables, the covid that blocked filming in New Zealand, the remakes and the imponderables, a future already planned. With a billion dollars, another sequel, Avatar 3 practically already finished and destined for next Christmas; plus two Avatar 4 and 5, scheduled for 2025 and 2027.

But these figures should not distract attention from what remains. Much more than a simple, gifted camera man James Cameron is a poetic visionary. A perfectionist, perhaps even a little manic, but attentive like no other to the technical evolution of the fabulous cinema machine. Thus, in the thirteen years separating the two Avatars, from performance capture to motion capture (the techniques that, by means of sensors and video cameras, allow us to obtain an extraordinary reproduction of the movement of the human body), the infinitely demanding Canadian scholar of technology has gone in search of rediscovery: of the inhabitants of our planet, increasingly deprived of access to the Marvelous.

Cameron was already attempting this in 1989's The Abyss. A film, so we wrote, in which the fascination of the amniotic element, the vertigo of the escape into the submerged unknown, the metaphysical questioning of the limits that separate us from the beyond, the faith in technology, are never smuggled in as cheap exoticism. But they are translated into fascination, very often into poetry; playing on the feeling of attraction-repulsion that the liquid element inspires in us. Back on the moon Pandora (and some length, in a film that in the original counts 3 hours and 12 min.) the Sully family is then forced to move from the already extraordinary forests of its primitive refuge to the primordial beaches; where they live with the gigantic (reassure yourself, adorable) inhabitants of the abyss.

Certainly the fabulous form of Avatar 2 may have overwhelmed our attention to a possibly simplistic anecdote? But the waterway of the title, cinema had not yet travelled it.
