Who could, in 1994 in Venice, award the Silver Lion for Performance to Vanessa Redgrave (perhaps forgetting a monstrous Tim Roth) who, with that first film, was making her debut as one of the greatest filmmakers of the post-Scorsese era?  And again: how can we forget how the beginnings of LITTLE ODESSA suggested those of a thriller, then progressively disguised? Indeed, a settling of scores between father and son....

Thirty years later, thanks to this ARMAGEDDON - THE TIME OF APOCALYSIS, many things become clearer. James Gray's first film was certainly a noir: about an equally black soul, within a family of Russian immigrants in Queens, New York. With that prodigal son returning home to carry out his duties as a glacial killer incognito. A metaphysical incursion into the darkest recesses of a group that the filmmaker will continue to probe later.

Thanks to the impeccable cut of those classical tragedy atmospheres, the scent of Yiddish disenchantment, the precocious visionary mastery in the direction of the actors, the director's themes and works will then stand out with the splendid, perverse sharpening of a diamond. Here we see the ambiguity of relationships with father and mother, the fragility of friendship, the inevitability of betrayal, the fatality of feelings.

As classic as ever in exhuming these feelings to the point of autobiographical evidence, ARMAGEDDON recounts, almost heartfelt, everything that mattered in James Gray's vision. It recalls two teenagers (but one is white, the other black...) losing their innocence. With a lucid and moved, sensitive and melancholic gaze that ends up involving a whole universe, already in those 1980s undermined by racism and anti-Semitism.

And so it is that James Gray, like the Steven Spielberg of his last film, fabulous in its intimacy and snubbed by the general public THE FABELMANS, not only returns to his own formation, to the intimacy of the family nucleus. But they sever, as soon as they take their first steps towards maturity, the modesty of their reminiscence. Accomplices here are the rare balance of the screenplay, the radiance in the semi-darkness of memory of Darius Khondji's photography.

The American filmmaker with the most limpid modernism had already managed a striking and then surprising break in tone by an action giant. In TWO LOVERS in 2008, he had turned his back on all explicit and spectacular violence. Bloodshed, mafias, exchanges of firearms had given way to issues all turned inward on the characters. No more grisly misdeeds, extraordinarily conducted; but a showdown all about the intimacy of the protagonists. Here, then, is that grandfather, so marvellously played in the undertones by Anthony Hopkins, in which the capricious turn of injustice experienced by the young nephew (a very tight Michael Banks Repeta) will find an outlet in the authoritative delicacy of a progressive, touching life lesson.
