Da BIRTH (2004) a UNDER THE SKIN (2013) trascorrono allora ben 9 anni;  da quest'ultimo all'attuale LA ZONA D'INTERESSE altri 10.

Until now, Jonathan Glazer's cinema has always reflected a certain kind of contradiction. But it has seemed to acquire an imperious progression over time, which has given it an increasingly modern character, a risk-taking that has multiplied its interest. From BIRTH (2004) to UNDER THE SKIN (2013) a good nine years then elapse; from the latter to the current THE ZONE OF INTEREST another ten. These are astonishing timeframes, reminiscent of a legendary Stanley Kubrick. But the eccentric vicissitudes experienced by a memorable Scarlett Johansson in UNDER THE SKIN stick in the memory. A mysterious alien made of furious but progressively less and less abstract sounds and lights, Jonathan Glazer managed to involve Scarlett in a romantic affair that defies abstraction. A vision sometimes bordering on surrealism, but continually brought back to us, a daring poem that an even moving conclusion makes difficult to trivialise.

Just as the opening of UNDER THE SKIN surprised us, the opening of THE ZONE OF INTEREST is then plunged into total darkness; of sufficient duration to already slightly disturb us. A vague unease that will never leave us again. Even though the film will not show us 'anything' glaringly repulsive. Only echoes, the barking of a few dogs, an escaped shout, the altered vocalaltered vociferation perhaps of a guard, the top of a chimney, the smoke, the clanking of a departing train. Is it not then that The ZONE OF INTEREST tells us a story that we already know but do notsee, terrible, but which above all we should never forget?

"I was stupefied by the proximity of the house and garden commander's lush garden from the Auschwitz camp," confessed Jonathan Glazer. His film constructed him in the impossible, terrible escape from that absolute Evil. Ours, of world, aspires to a universe not unlike that of the dutiful Rudolph Höss, the

camp commandant. The flower beds and the perfectly mowed lawn, the seasonal vegetables and fruit trees, the swimming pool with the slide for young and old. But, as Glaser, "if we continue to think of ourselves only as possible victims, and not as possible executioners like the Hösses, we will never change".
