Can one direct the intimacy of an autobiography towards homage, to finally turn it into artistic expression? If yes, in other words if cinema is still able to tread this happy path, The Fabelmans is probably the most significant film of the year. Chasing after that now blurry object called cinema, Steven Spielberg's 34th feature still translates into an unmissable act of love.

The quality, the charm, the emotion that The Fabelmans succeeds in arousing, however, do not arise simply from the fact of being an (albeit partial) autobiography. That is, not so much the confession of a giant of modern cinema who is approaching eighty years of age in the sometimes dissimilar yet significant footsteps of E.T., Indiana Jones, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List or West Side Story. It is not just a story: it begins in 1952 in the suburbs of New Jersey, when parents decide to go to a movie theatre for the first time, accompanying their son here called Sammy. The film was Cecil B. DeMille's latest, The Greatest Show on Earth, but the very young Sammy did not like it. Traumatised as he was by the realistic train crash depicted in the film.

The intelligence, the interest of The Fabelmans make, however, that the exorcising of that trauma, the first exercises with the eight-millimetre camera, the accidental discovery through the lens of a decisive family drama that will condition the family, constitute only the premises for an increasingly implicit reflection. Far from the predictability of the coming-of-age novel; but equally confronted with elements that coincide with Spielberg's biography and his Jewish family of Russian-Ukrainian origin. A binary, unexpected, moving and wise, constantly bringing further motivation. Surprising in its simplicity, which begins with a young boy going to the cinema, but is already preparing to leave it as soon as he reaches an adult age that will make him the modern filmmaker par excellence for many.

What remains, then, is what counts: the decisive importance of the gaze in cinema, the strength of its power when it comes to discovering, even changing the appearance of the reality observed. In search of truth and knowledge. Infinite secrets never betrayed of an emotional tension that in the film will result in a disarming poetic resonance.
