The sibylline Korean's cinema is an admirable, perhaps at times even disturbing example of how the seventh art can be fragile, contradictory, but equally fascinating. Some 20 years have passed since Park Chan-Wook, after not a few misunderstandings but already an award at Cannes, signed LADY VENGEANCE (2005), the conclusion of his trilogy on the subject. Again the violence he had been so often reproached for. But which this time had to be saved; as the reason for a kind of redemption on the part of the protagonist.

In form, in short, an expression of refined, sophisticated provocation. But with the same risk, the surprise effect, that caught the unprepared audience of Cannes critics unprepared, when the splendour of the former ended up prevailing over the latter. In the first part of the triptych, the question was who was entitled to revenge. In OLD BOY (2003), which Tarantino had adored and also awarded at Cannes, everything revolved around: but must evil, at all costs, result in revenge? Or again: is it the desire for revenge that is at the origin of violence, or is it not just the opposite?

In the midst of these more or less clear-cut considerations, a progression was nonetheless emerging, dramatic, even laborious, but ambitious. In a style: which some will find bordering on exhibitionism, but in which it is impossible to deny the impression of an imperious cast like few others.

Mastery of a style of resounding beauty almost bordering on complacency; of a refined, sophisticated provocation, here after some twenty years DECISION TO LEAVE now proves that it deserves the Best Director award, won in the rich edition of Cannes 2022.

From the peaks of a mountain to the vertigo of a conclusion at sea level, a crime thriller, an ultimately romantic story: having shaded violence into melodrama, here is passion, that of a policeman for the main suspect in his investigation.  Where, as in VERTIGO, Hitchcock's masterpiece that, with the passing of time, many consider the unforgettable of all cinema, before solving a crime it is a question of elucidating a feeling.

Was it fatality that led to the businessman's fall in the course of the climb; or did the Chinese wife have more than something to do with the outcome? Park translates this traditional question into continuous cinematic forms; not in the 'usual' conception of beauty, but in a continuous intersection of interventions, first and foremost through the density of an astonishingly innovative montage. Almost unbeknownst to him, the viewer is caught up in this game of skilful mastery. Not everything is obvious; but it is a game, as they used to say, worth more than a candle.
