Bradley Cooper's name already told us something. Five years ago he had, among other things, dusted off a title destined for a long haul. In vogue since 1937, when it had served William Wellmann to win an Oscar with the original version of A STAR IS BORN. The plot of A STAR IS BORN was, however, already indebted to the earlier WHAT PRICE HOLLYWOOD?, directed in 1932 by a film great like George Cukor.

A plot, destined in time to become a cult object; and which would be repeated no less than three more times. Starting with the masterpiece starring Judy Garland and James Mason, again directed by Cukor in 1954. To end finally, in 2018, with Bradley Cooper's (and Lady Gaga's) debut as a director in the growing career as an actor that we know.

A typically Hollywood braid?  But which today MAESTRO seems to confirm, armed as it is with a brio, a lightness, an ease absolutely worthy of that half-dozen films built on the birth of new stars. Miraculously conducted with a hand deliciously free of any embarrassment, actor-director Bradley Cooper's second film manages to capture with unusual, delightful intuition the overflowing energy of its two splendid leads. The increasingly surprising Carey Mulligan (it will be difficult to contrast her at the upcoming Oscars) paired with Cooper: one of the most accomplished that cinema has offered us in a long time.

Armed with the same skilful naturalness as its protagonists, MAESTRO then seems to impose itself in a biopic that is certainly not without its narrative pitfalls. That of the incomparable American conductor, pedagogue and composer Leonard Bernstein, second after Carlos Kleiber in the daring ranking of the greatest conductors of all time.

In the seductive period reconstruction that takes us from the 1940s to his call at the age of 25 to conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, MAESTRO then takes us on a fascinating journey, as touching as it is delicate, into intimacy. That between a genius, Jewish, bisexual, with musical aspirations that sublimate into an almost childlike exaltation. With Felicia, his wife, a Chilean, concrete and understanding, in a relationship that attempts to explain the inexplicable and ends up in heartfelt affection.

Wisely generous, never lofty, alternating between the use of colour and black and white depending on the era, the use of sequence plans in many key sequences, and the engaging adherence of his actors, Bradley Cooper's second more than admirable work as director and actor succeeds in blending the right gazes to describe a disparate existential process. At once exalted and melancholic, engaging and original, it did not escape Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg's attention when they decided to co-produce the film.
