THE OLD OAK is not Ken Loach's most original film, but his most urgent. At 87, the most down-to-earth of the humanist filmmakers of our time illustrates the humbly real story that takes place in an ordinary small town in contemporary Britain.

Not a paradox. But a story that tells us for the umpteenth time, in its simplicity (some will naturally speak of the obvious), that it is rooted in the everyday life of each of us. Few can touch our consciences like Ken Loach. When, as here, he paints for us the welcome that even the most benevolent world reserves for migrants.

The irreducible British filmmaker, with his simplicity, his enchanted ease in avoiding the conformism of good sentiments, tells then of the reception of a group of Syrian refugees in a hamlet in northern England.

An event, as we know, not to be overlooked, that will progressively concentrate in the old pub Old Loak: the home of the daily habitués. Loach will put his own spin on it, and the conclusion will not necessarily be conformist.
