A 12 anni, Nora e Hae Sung sono amici dai tempi dell'infanzia. Si piacciono, ma le circostanze li separano. 8 anni più tardi il caso li riavvicinerà, ma per poco. Si ritroveranno a 36 anni: adulti, confrontati a quanto e a come avrebbero potuto essere.

Nel suo capriccioso modo di riavvolgersi, il cinema sembra talvolta scoprire il segreto per riuscire ad affrontare lo scorrere del tempo, PAST LIVES, ne è la dimostrazione emozionante. Qualche cineasta, come il grande Alain Resnais, come Richard Linklater nella sua straordinaria trilogia di BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET e BEFORE MIDNIGHT ne hanno fatto il segno del proprio linguaggio nel corso di una vita.

Il tempo che trascorre è allora la solida, solidissima struttura sulla quale si regge una storia che indoviniamo in buona parte autobiografica. Avrebbe potuto essere soltanto risaputa, convenzionale o peggio ancora melensa. Tutto all'opposto, Celine Song, sceneggiatrice e drammaturga di origine coreana ma cresciuta in Canada al suo primo lungometraggio, la trasforma in una evocazione dalla semplicità disarmante, indimenticabile. 

Nora (Greta Lee) e Hae Sung (Teo You) sono  allora i due preadolescenti che a Seul si dividono sul cammino che li riconduce da scuola. Partita Nora con la famiglia a New York, i due perderanno ogni contatto. Che ritroveranno, ancora casualmente grazie all'aiuto questa volta di Facebook e Skype. Ma, sopratutto, poichè PAST LIVES non è un film romantico. Malgrado le apparenze, quelli dei due bravissimi protagonisti sono infatti due tragitti paralleli, seguiti con una trepidazione mai dolciastra, che il tempo consolida ma in definitiva corrompe. Dove i silenzi, le esitazioni contano più delle parole;  e  la quotidianità mai ingenua di scene apparentemente banali acquista una profondità sorprendente.

PAST LIMES non è un film ingenuo. Ce lo confessa Greta Lee , quando riassume la sua giostra nella vita spiegandoci che " è stato come piantare due alberi nello stesso vaso".

In its whimsical way of rewinding, cinema sometimes seems to discover the secret to succeeding in dealing with the passage of time, PAST LIVES, is a thrilling demonstration of this. Some filmmakers, such as the great Alain Resnais, such as Richard Linklater in his extraordinary trilogy of BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET and BEFORE MIDNIGHT have made it the mark of their language over a lifetime.

The passage of time is then the solid, very solid structure on which stands a story that we guess is largely autobiographical. It could have been merely rehearsed, conventional or even worse, melancholy. All to the contrary, Celine Song, a Korean-born but Canadian-raised screenwriter and playwright on her first feature film, turns it into an evocation of disarming, unforgettable simplicity. 

Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo You) are then the two preteens in Seoul who part ways on the path back from school. As Nora leaves with her family to New York, the two will lose all contact. Which they will find again, still casually thanks to the help this time of Facebook and Skype. 

But, above all, because PAST LIVES is not a romantic film. Despite appearances, those of the two talented protagonists are in fact two parallel journeys, followed with a never-sweetened trepidation that time consolidates but ultimately corrupts. Where silences, hesitations count more than words; and the never naive everydayness of seemingly banal scenes acquires a surprising depth.

PAST LIMES is not a naive film. Greta Lee confesses this to us , when she sums up her merry-go-round in life by explaining that " it was like planting two trees in the same pot."
