Perhaps it is worth remembering. Only five years ago, at the Oscars, the mess was sensational. LA LA LAND was awarded six statuettes: Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Score, Best Original Song. Just under half of the 14 nominations - a record number - that had been awarded to the film. But a seventh statuette, the most important one, was not meant for Damien Chazelle, who was already celebrating at the microphone. In fact, the award was to be given to a contender, to MOONLIGHT by Barry Jenkins. It was a gaffe, but one that ultimately benefited the 30-year-old filmmaker, who was suddenly admired by critics, but equally by a very wide range of viewers, which does not happen very often.

LA LA LAND had many qualities, it gracefully and effectively resurrected musical comedy, it ignored easy nostalgia, it approached contemporary concerns that were anything but obvious, it shared an overt passion for authentic music. Last but not least, he created real characters.

How much of this is confirmed in the highly ambitious BABYLON? Starting with the ill-considered length of the film, three hours and nine minutes, which any producer with common sense should deny artists a priori, unless they have APOCALYPSE NOW or GONE WITH THE WIND on their hands, which is not every day.  An absurd length of time for the big screen and popcorn theatres, probably born out of the idea of counteracting that of series destined for home TV, if not exactly in hasty flashes on mobile phones.

BABYLON is then an imposing film, in part certainly virtuosic in shots of seqeunces plan; but constantly marked by the exaggerated approach of an unnecessarily demonstrative look.

Desecrating Hollywood puerility and glitz from the silent black-and-white era to that of the advent of colour sound is certainly not an unprecedented operation. Certainly, it allows one to catch up with the masterpieces of Billy Wilder, Elia Kazan or Quentin Tarantino; while at the same time inducing reflections on an increasingly evident crisis. Chazelle sticks chronologically to SINGING IN THE RAIN, not least because the universe of Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly allows him to satisfy his undoubted taste for music. But the gigantism of the film ends up overwhelming any good intentions, dissolving the surprising audiovisual frenzy towards an increasingly distant and dispersive conclusion.
