This rather intriguing title, 3/19, is arrived at through a meticulous journey of introspection, as Silvio Soldini often likes to do. It is a number assigned to people who die anonymously during the course of the year. Almost always, an immigrant. And the author of Un'anima divisa in due, of Le acrobate, but ever since his first L'aria serena dell'ovest, it has always happened that he has moved through those demure mosaics, routes constructed with stylistic sensitivity. Symmetrical links, increasingly secret, almost metaphysical, as ends up happening in this latest feature film of his.

They are mosaics that work more chorally than on the track of a real dramatic progression. A successful lawyer in an important multinational company, Camilla (Kasia Smutniak, undoubtedly capable of taking ownership of the film) has little time to devote to anything other than international meetings, millionaire investments and strategies often illustrated in a technical vocabulary. A macho universe, which the screenplay rightly avoids simplifying. An amazing Milan, seen from a bird's eye view, hovering above the skyscrapers. Before looking further down, where more ordinary mortals are stirring. Beginning with her twenty-year-old daughter, who does not hide her hostility towards her increasingly absent mother.

The sense of guilt does not burn to the surface, adding itself to something more recent. Crossing a road in the pouring rain, Camilla is hit by a moped. Of the two non-EU citizens on board, one gets away, but the other remains on the ground. Camilla is left with a doubt: was the traffic light on that strip green or red? The dilemma will end up getting bigger, while the protagonist will end up realising that nobody seems to care about the identity of the anonymous victim.

A world made up of reception centres and homeless people seems to reveal itself to Camilla, in parallel with a private and emotional world of her own that has to be reconstructed. There are many traces, perhaps too many, that the film is preparing to decipher. The actors, who, as always, we feel are close to a filmmaker who is emotionally involved, help behind the demands of their expressive quality
