Presented at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 Land of Dreams is a precious (perhaps too much so) and curious film, shot by the artist Shirin Neshat of Iranian origin but resident in the United States, assisted by her husband Shoja Azari. A film undoubtedly imbued with the intentions and quality of a particular gaze, by someone long accustomed to MoMA in New York. An experienced videomaker, close to the Festival, where she was already awarded a Silver Lion in 2009 for her Women without Men.

But that's not all. Besides the presence in the cast of a lively and now rare Isabella Rossellini, the project Land of Dreams is surprising. If only for the presence of a name like that of Jean-Claude Carrière, mythical scriptwriter of Luis Bunuel's masterpieces, who died a few months after the film's release, the author of The Diary of a Maid, Beauty by Day, The Milky Way, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, That Obscure Object of Desire...

Certainly coincidentally, the film seems to reflect the latter title. Neshat and Carrière illustrate the story of Simin (the talented Sheila Vand of the remarkable A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) who traverses the America of boundless expanses ploughed by the nighttime headlights of cars, with singers, lost in bars with coloured signs to the point of obsession. A universe we have long known. But which the authors send here into a surrealism that could have seduced: in the likeness of the Farsi poems that merge into Neshat's concrete portraits in a dimension between dream and ambiguity. Just like that of Simin, who for a census agency is in charge of "surveilling" American citizens in order to ensure their safety.

One would then wish for a satire, animated by a political backdrop, that would go as far as dealing with topics such as racism or xenophobia. But the frame, certainly sumptuous, remains so. While the distant eccentricity of Land of dreams becomes increasingly insubstantial.
