One step forward or one step back? Rather, one on the spot. A more than brilliant and ambitious exponent of a cinema that has been announced as innovative at every Hollywood break, the author of an enviable crescendo leading to the heights of SEVEN, in 1977, then THE SOCIAL NETWORK, BENJAMIN BUTTON, MILLENNIUM, GONE GIRL up to MANK (2020) David Fincher will never cease to make us discuss.

As its title states, without cheating, THE KILLER then traces the eloquent trajectory of a killer. In which the irreplaceable Michael Fassbender (Tarantino's BASTARDS WITHOUT GLORY, then HUNGER, SHAME and Steve McQueen's 12 YEARS AGO, then the Cronenberg of A DANGEROUS METHOD, and sorry to say so little...) does not seem to believe it all the way through. THE KILLER is a hellish machine that the 60-year-old filmmaker superbly starts but somehow ends up jamming.

Fassbender wears a concrete image, only seemingly conforming to that conveyed to us by the rich cinematic heritage dedicated to hitmen. He believes the first, very clever images Fincher dedicates to him, but (without revealing anything of the intricate story) when things get complicated his hitman will be at his first mistake of a relentless career.

If he almost falls silent on the way there, it is not because of an oversight in the script: rather, it is to adapt to the film's enormous respect for technology, to the contemporary vision of the relaxation offered by a yoga break. From a mind, then, that tries to organise itself in the sense of what the voice-over suggests: 'It's simple, always anticipate, never improvise, stay focused'.

This may be Fincher's credo in the film. But THE KILLER is solid and relentless only in appearance: that represented by the vast technological survey that the director films with proverbial wisdom, but also with progressive fatigue. Not even the late appearance of a surprising Tilda Swinton is enough to humanise the tale.

The fate of THE KILLER is then plotted in the likeness of that of its protagonist. Like the impeccable, at times more than admirable portrayal that the filmmaker has built around him, but with a feeling of unfinishedness in which the film (perhaps due to the compromises linked to the Netflix universe) ends up creating. What is undoubtedly true is that one can live, but also die, by great filmmaking.
