Via libera d'interpretarla allo sconsolato spettatore.

====================================================================

It is not easy to dissertate on Tre piani, perhaps not even for Nanni Moretti. From the beginning, we have adored the filmmaker who has forever left his mark on such great cinema as Italian cinema. Yet, we read about Tre piani, and it is hard to disagree, that it is probably his most problematic film. Worse, that one wonders whether his last film was really signed by the author of Palombella rossa, Caro diario or Habemus Papam.

We may be wrong, but what is certain is that at the age of sixty-seven, and after having left the imprint of his own personality on his filmography like few others, Nanni has made something different from all that he had accustomed us to. On the other hand, it is precisely for the reason of being of that "everything" that we adored him...

It is worth noting, then, that Three Floors is based on the eloquent but complex novel by Israeli Eshkol Nievo. It is the first film in his thirteen-year career not to be based on an original subject by Moretti. Therefore, to progressively observe how the film lacks what in cinema is normally able to leaven the literary structure, however instructive and possibly touching it may be.

In short, we have to believe in that universe shifted from its exquisite origin and now projected on a screen. Deprived at the same time of its author's inimitable irony, Three Floors remains respectable, but hardly thrilling. All the ingredients would have been there. Three floors in a bourgeois block of flats for three stories destined to intersect in an increasingly allusive way: a couple of magistrates whose alcohol-addled son causes a fatal car accident, a father convinced that his daughter has been the victim of a sexual assault by his senile neighbour, the loneliness of a young pregnant woman with an absent husband who fears he may inherit his mother's mental disorders.

The actor Nanni Moretti then appears in the role of the glacial magistrate, one of the most interesting to act in his intransigence. But on the contrary, and perhaps deliberately, he remains detached from the general context, almost confined to the minimum. Not by chance? In a film that, like the previous Mia Madre, seems to be increasingly detached, in its writing as in its acting, from the often exalting impulses of Moretti's past.

Thus, we said of the sensitive 2015 film Mia Madre that it was now a film about bewilderment: about a world that increasingly eluded those who tried to understand it. The father judge in Tre piani belongs more and more to that Morettian turn. By lovingly assisting his mother, Nanni was then still in that film a figure of beautiful humanity that stood out in the general turmoil. Although without abdicating, in his own restraint as in his participation which felt autobiographical, that narcissism which remained, as a matter of duty, an inalienable sign of his personality.

Apparently not any more. Leaning on a faded vision (from the photography to the set design, to the editing), Moretti's latest film ends up involving his more-than-luxurious cast: who seem to be disinterested in the surrounding events rather than distressed by them. As if only then realising what had happened, the author concludes the affair with the sequence, with a satiety that we would be careful not to define as Fellini-like, of a group of dancers walking away, dancing on the road ahead. It is up to the disconsolate spectator to interpret it.
