Affascinante e irritante, spregiudicato e inconcluso, memorabile o indigestibile?

Fascinating and irritating, unscrupulous and uncontained, memorable or indigestible? Already in 2014 it was said of Birdman how identical the work was to its author. Talented, certainly, the Mexican Alejandro Inarritu. But on which one still had the question that arose from the previous Biutiful. Had not the time come to re-examine how much weight the screenplays by the great Mexican novelist Guillermo Arriaga had had on the filmmaker's work? Those that had welcomed the director's aesthetic intuitions within spatial and temporal mosaics, coincidences and interactions between characters born from literary intuitions. And destined to produce the intriguing fascination that followed the sensational debut of Amores Perros in 2000?

The limpid and fabulous architecture of Arriaga's screenplays is now a distant memory. But the original 180 minutes (wisely reduced to 160 on Netflix) of this Bardo -the false chronicle of some truths that comes to us, perhaps indicatively, seven years after the previous The Revenant , certainly does nothing to help resolve those doubts.

Inspired not exactly humbly in the image of Fellini's 8 1/2, the limits of Bardo's 'message-tribute' are then all too evident. With the autobiographical Mexican documentary filmmaker of worldwide reputation Silverio Gama, who became world-famous in Los Angeles as Inarritu did, deciding to return to Mexico City. Accomplices are the memory of childhood friends, some Oscar-like awards as well as the homage built into the film by a TV first-timer.

An intellectual with a traditional sense of guilt, our Silveiro - Alejandro then lives out his nightmares. More than legitimate, were it not that Inarritu translates them (inevitably?) in his own way. Fabulous images (signed by the great Darius Khondji...) but with a purely photographic use. Meanings are immediately phoned in, for example the parturient to whom the obstetrician informs that the newborn has expressed the need to be put back in the womb... In a progressively grandiloquent continuation: constantly opening up with inhuman wide-angle lenses the expanse of coastlines and grasslands of a lush and indifferent Mexico.
