1978, THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL. THE YEAR OF OLMI, OSHIMA, FASSBINDER, CHABROL, MAKK, HANDKE, SKOLIMOVSKY...

Olmi abitava a Milano.

L'URLO (THE SHOUT) del polacco Jerzy Skolimovsky.

REREADING THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL - 1978, THE YEAR OF OLMI, OSHIMA, FASSBINDER, CHABROL, MAKK, HANDKE, SKOLIMOVSKY

I will tell you first of all about a man of cinema who went "through" without allowing himself to be scratched; who seems not even to have noticed how cinema is also, and above all, spectacle. And spectacle, more often than not, deteriorating. Ermanno Olmi (remember the black and white of IL POSTO if not I FIDANZATI or LA CIRCOSTANZA?  Time passes, as you know, quickly. And Olmi writes slowly, with his camera, once every three or four years. He has not been touched by the contagion. The one imposed by all of us who pay a ticket to witness certain patterns of behavior, certain formulas, a certain way of looking at life that more and more, moves away from life. Olmi lived in Milan. And it was there that he shot THE PLACE poking through the convulsive life of the big city in search of those people, those facts that still had an ancient meaning, close to each of us. Then, Olmi realized he could no longer live in a city "in which you can walk around with your hands in your pockets" and went to Asiago. He found in a drawer his first film writings, those of twenty years ago, the memoirs, his grandfather's tales of peasant life. And he went back to the origins, ours and of the characters in THE PLACE, to when people still lived in contact with nature, on the rhythm marked by daylight and the changing of the seasons. Olmi (perhaps he doesn't know there was Godard, Antonioni or Sajines) watched those Bergamasque peasants let themselves live. And he filmed. If we look at his film from within, from where it should be looked at, from the soul, we immediately see that it is a clean look, of a simple honesty that cinema no longer possesses. Or still possesses it, perhaps in some African or Far Eastern filmmakers. There is no forced light in THE TREE OF TOOTS, not a ray of sunshine coming through the window to illuminate the bowl of steaming soup, not a shout, a seductive perspective. The look (the cutting of a scene, the editing of a sequence) begins where it must begin: and ends at the right moment, not that extra moment, showing us the poplars disappearing into the fog. Olmi, with misery, with the life of man, does not make aestheticism, he does not make spectacle. His is a simple testimony. But Olmi's simplicity is something difficult and precious: to have been able to preserve it is a moving and extraordinary event. There will be those who will say that Olmi's peasants are passive, that there is no class struggle, that his is pure evocative nostalgia, that the good feelings and faith of that nineteenth-century world had not yet known Freud, or Marx, or Hitler. THE TREE OF FOOTNOTES is not NINETH CENTURY, it is not AMARCORD; each follows its own path. But the stillness of Olmi's peasants, to whom the master takes away the cow and the calf, is not resignation, nor is it helplessness. We, who live a century later, know this.

The film, with the contemplative sovereignty that characterizes it, is a work that dwarfs the other works seen in the days that followed. Perhaps this is also why people like Oshima, Fassbinder, Skolimovsky, Chabrol, Reisz (among those seen so far) have seemed, some more and some less, to disappoint. Let us look at them, succinctly,

Nagisha Oshima's THE EMPIRE OF PASSION (Japan): Oshima has been making films for many years, but in Europe he has been famous for only two: his THE EMPIRE OF THE SENSES caused a sensation. It was an extraordinary celebration of sexuality, a ritual in which love and death were sublimated as only Japanese cinema could render. Commercial success, of course, came only from seeing two people make love for a couple of hours. In the latest Oshima there is much less sex, sorry to disappoint; unfortunately, there is also less spirituality. It is the story of two lovers who do away with her husband, but who live afterward in the nightmare of the dead man's ghost, as well as the police. All of this is not particularly unprecedented. The film is very telling, and the Japanese master's admittedly skillful imagery does not always succeed in elevating meanings above pure representation. Which, for an Oshima, is serious.

DESPAIR: The well-known, brilliant, but sometimes confused German director Rainer Fassbinder had, perhaps for the first time, a lot of money and a great international actor at his disposal as Dirk Bogarde. The film is about the anguish of a Jewish chocolate maker, in the Germany of the advent of Nazism, and his desire, bordering on madness, to assume the identity of another, to split himself, according to the well-known concepts in use (cinematically). Above all, Fassbinder seems eager to prove that he is capable of making exquisitely packaged cinema. And he succeeds. But inspiration is lacking. We do not speak of clarity to this whipping boy of bourgeois vices. But his provocation becomes gratuitous at times.

VIOLETTTE NOZIERE by Claude Chabrol. The fact and the character were fascinating: the protagonist is well known in France for having poisoned, in Paris in '32, her parents. She thus killed her father, then sentenced to death, then to life imprisonment, finally pardoned and even rehabilitated by De Gaulle after the war. There is much more to Violette than the Freudian destruction of her father. A prisoner of the meanness of her own environment, she must destroy him to free herself, to escape the daily moral imprisonment to which she is forced. It is the yearning for spiritual escape that did not escape the Surrealists of those times who passionately defended her (Paul Eluard's lines have remained famous: "Elle a brisé l'affreux serpent de ses liens de sang." Just by playing on the background, on the environment, on its destruction an inspired director could have made a masterpiece out of it. Chabrol is as master of his craft as few and has poked around the mazes of the petty bourgeoisie for a long time: his interest in the subject is understandable. But it is his vein that is tired: the film is neither dreamlike, nor delirious, nor rational. It is only poorly constructed, especially in the sequences shot in the family setting. The ones that were supposed to explain motivation.

A VERY MORAL NIGHT (Egy erkölcôs éjszaka) by Hungarian Karoly Makk is a formally seductive and sensitive reconstruction of a brothel house of days gone by. Memories of Bolognini's LA VIACCIA: But of all this, let's face it, we care very little.

LA DONNA MANCINA, by German Peter Handke. Young and well known as a writer, Handke makes his debut as a director, after collaborating with the now established Wim Wenders. It is the crisis of a couple, a meditation on loneliness shot in the suburbs of Paris, in a photographic style very similar to Wenders' hyperrealist style, Handke has a lucid and exact gaze. A cinema, for now, that calls itself literary. In short, a little glacial: and head-on.

THE SHOUT by Polish director Jerzy Skolimovsky. Skolimovsky (DEEP END) is a great director, the kind who has the gift of being able to turn the everyday into the fantastic, to intuit with a glance the magic of poetry. THE SHOUT is certainly a film dil remarkable value. It tells of an English couple living on the cliffs of Devon, who see a mysterious stranger arrive in their home, heir, he says, to the supernatural virtues of the Australian aborigines. The scream is his, and it kills anyone who hears it. The Greeks and the Irish believed in these things: what does the 1978 viewer think? It becomes difficult for him to distinguish the true from the false. Also because the whole tale is told to a writer, during a cricket match. It is Skolimovsky's typical process: to make invisible the frontiers between reality and imagination, between reason and madness. the film is, after Olmi's, the most original work seen so far at Cannes. But it is not the best Skolimovsky, which remains that of DEEP END, an unattainable example of transforming bleak everyday reality into the prospect of a dream. Nowadays, even though the Italians already won a year ago with PADRE PADRONE, any hypothesis that did not crown L'ALBERO DEGLI ZOCCOLI would be a pure insult to common sense.
