Following a trauma, the protagonist (Guy Pearce) lost his immediate memory, his most recent memories. To remedy this, he uses Polaroid photos and tattoos on his body. Nice theme, that in his second feature film the English director Christopher Nolan pimenta with the question made on purpose to capture the ranks of fans of the genre: is someone taking advantage of the poor man's troubles to have him kill someone? Nice theme: because, in addition to amnesia (a privileged field in the tradition of detective stories, from Chandler's novels to the mythical IL GRANDE SONNO), it allows us to ask questions about manipulation, such as the relativity of memory, identity or love.
A good pretext, that of MEMENTO, by a director who also knows what he's doing, to abuse that process of cinematographic memory called flashback. A whole series of comings and goings to the reconstruction of the mosaic that should have been built on a very solid screenplay. It fascinates, then perhaps irritates: also because one would like to understand something more.
