=======================================================================

Reverse the course of Time, in order to avoid a Third World War. Promised this and more the great expectation for Tenet, postponed for months because of Covid. Christopher Nolan, in fact, from Memento's 2000, and later on throughout one of his truly fascinating works, but in particular with Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014) and finally Dunkirk (2017), he first made Time his favorite toy. Then, in this last work of his, his own obsession.

Tenet is then a palindromic word; the sequence of its letters, that is, can occur in reverse, starting from the end, without changing its meaning. As we know from the time of its origin, it is from the initial writing of one of his screenplays to the innumerable final interventions allowed by the manipulation obtained through editing that cinema appears as a privileged field for the purpose of intervening on a temporal succession. It is possible to excite, eventually to the point of arbitrariness, but also only to confusion, what is normally considered narrative logic. Reversing, for example, the path of a bullet: from its terminal destination to the barrel of the weapon that exploded it.

This could usefully happen also in this matter from the spy origins in the end reassuring: also because shot through the world, in confirmation of his own (legitimate) Jamesbondian inspirations. With an American spy (John David Washington, rightly measured) who discovers how a new weapon allows to intervene on the past as well as on the future: thus modifying the fate of a conflict with obviously apocalyptic consequences. There is no shortage of the villain on duty, a Kenneth Branagh who will end up being the most effective; then a photogenic though not exactly memorable Robert Pattinson, and the elegant but not exactly empathic Elisabeth Debicki.

Thanks to the quality of a look of the London filmmaker that we don't discover today, Tenet glissa also wisely glisses her 157 minutes with some spectacular brackets: all the beginning, shot in the Kiev Opera, where the spectators scattered throughout the immense audience end up drugged by what we guess to be the bad guys. Or an enormous quadrigetto, which leads them to invade the hangar of Oslo airport for purposes that are certainly not peaceful.

What seems to have interested Nolan the most, however, remains the deepening of his temporal concerns. Ultimately with a recourse, from the repetitiveness more and more simplistic, to the upside down assembly. Certainly, a procedure with which the Lumière brothers had already surprised the spectators first. But at the end of the nineteenth century.
