How to live with death? Contradicting the Croisette's traditional trend of palm trees, starlets and fatty annoyances, while waiting for Nanni Moretti's film, but also those of de Oliveira, Tsai Ming-Liang, Cédric Kahn or Imamura, the question that seems to run through the watermark of half the world's cinema present at this crazy festival is precisely that.

The elaboration of mourning, its apprenticeship. The re-appropriation of memory: as a value that binds us to those who were dear to us. But, equally, to that nature, to those objects, lights and atmospheres that were theirs. And which the survivors continue to nourish themselves with, since they conserve, and perhaps will conserve forever, the energy, the charge of affection, the indelible imprint of those who have disappeared. Clearly high content, not necessarily expressed in melodrama, anguish or negativity.

Sometimes even with the lightness, grace and humour of poetry. In these first few days of Cannes, in the midst of an environment that has become more and more discoloured by the curiosity dictated by easy consumption, the cinema has shown, against all evidence (think of the Italian cinema, in the face of the current situation) that it can still aspire to be a traditional territory of escape. But without renouncing to be one of reflection and intelligence.

As in the previous L'ALBERO DELLE CILIEGIE (The Cherry Tree) seen at Locarno in 1998, the Catalan Marc Recha continues in PAU E SUO FRATELLO (PAU AND HIS BROTHER) the search for those mysterious breaths that bind us to an order that is perhaps not only cosmic, but also eternal. After his brother's disappearance by suicide, Pau leaves Barcelona with his mother: towards the lost village among the peaks of the Pyrenees, where the young man lived his last years. Among his belongings; but, above all, among those who loved him. In that same intimacy that united them, and of which they will try to regain possession, even physically, even sexually. As well as the mysterious chiaroscuro of the mountains, the breezes that descend from the peaks when darkness enters between the houses, the sounds that come to life when the light returns to make its way along the ridges. Echoes of a natural order, which bring us closer to the sky than few others.

With even greater density, since it comes from a cultural tradition particularly close to meditation and the supernatural, DISTANCE, by the Japanese Kore Eda, takes its characters on a surprisingly similar journey. After a massacre followed by the usual collective suicide by members of a religious sect, relatives and survivors return, some years later, to the places and reasons for such atrocity. An elderly documentary filmmaker, author of two extraordinarily beautiful films on the theme of disappearance, memory and the possibility of materialising such abstract entities (MABOROSI and AFTER LIFE), the Japanese director continues his research. So similar to that of his characters: transposed to their own reality, their own time and their fellow men. Composed of long shots, pauses and silences that are filled only by the sounds of nature in which those who try to understand and trust the memory of the disappeared are forced to spend the night, the film is one that requires patience. Less fascinating, perhaps less successful than its predecessors, DISTANCE nevertheless confirms the singularity of a cinematic gaze that is as subdued as it is imperious, made up of a breath that transforms the extremely true, naturalistic observation of the universe into a supernatural and highly spiritual landscape.

STRICTLY BALLROOM was in Locamo (1992), ROMEO AND GIULIETTA in Berlin (the first time for Leonardo di Caprio), MOULIN ROUGE, noblesse oblige, lands the supreme (spectacular) honours of the Cannes opening. There are several common threads linking the three works; a sign that, for better or worse, it is an author. Music and theatre, of course: Baz Luhrmann the Australian was a pupil of Peter Brook and started out in operatic melodrama. Then, the themes: something like faith in love coming to the head of every plot. Then, the enhancement of youthful energy, of the glamour of its actors. Lastly, the style: made up of excess, over-the-top stylisation, references to the past transposed with who knows how much of an intellectually controlled or thoughtlessly squandered talent.

A Peter Greenaway who had set out to bungle WEST SIDE STORY, we would say of the palms scrambled in his previous Verona Beach: almost as if to anticipate his foray into musicals. Let's be clear, tragic lovers, references to tradition, musical comedy in their own way: Luhrnrann takes up, of course, the Toulouse-Lautrec, Erik Satie, garters, champagne and cancan of tradition. He remembers (perhaps) certain illustrious predecessors such as the Renoirs and John Huston. But more than anything else, he makes his own a wish that some will end up considering pious: my Toulouse-Lautrec is Andy Warhol. And so here we go again with the postmodernism that we had already invoked in favour of his more or less video-clip delirium: on the remains of that Belle Epoque, on the costumes and sets that were already quite insane for themselves, Luhrmann lets pop, techno and disco dance, the Beatles and Madonna, Elton John and David Bowie, U2, Queen, Sting or Like a Virgin pass through. Some will find the result of this unhinged luxury: but, at least for an hour, it seems more than exciting to me.

Commendable and courageous: in an entertainment world where no one (even talented ones) take risks. In short, to be appreciated, MOULIN ROUGE must be taken for what it is: a cheeky, immense and flamboyant video clip that has the impudence to smuggle Offenbach with much of the best of the music favoured by his grandchildren. It mixes reminiscences of Broadway with those of a hyperrealism over the roofs of Montmartre: with the intense blues of Klein, the thunder and lightning of advertising cinema, the twilight models of Dorè remade with the perfection of digital techniques, the moon laughing and crying of Meliès instead of the good old Parisian naturalism. And then there is Nicole Kidman; sexy and bloodless, marvellous and fatal like the Hayworths and Bacalls we thought we had lost forever, shameless and fragile like the Marilyns or the last Roberts at the same time. In that light-hearted merry-go-round she is worth the price of the ticket alone, believe me.

Amidst Christmas trees, dolls and garlands, crucifixes and madonnas on the walls, and all the good feelings fuelled by the choruses against a backdrop of skating in Central Park, R

It doesn't matter who started it, we're all in the m...: in the no man's land of the title, between the two front lines, a Serb and a Bosnian find themselves in a tragicomic trap. It is war, in all the dementia of its contemporary splendour: it is the violence experienced by the simple man in his own skin, observed through binoculars by the graduates and by politicians on the television screen. It is violence experienced at first hand by the simple man, observed through binoculars by graduates and politicians on television. If we thought we knew everything about the cruel absurdity of the situation in the former Yugoslavia, if many had taken care to illustrate the particular animosity of the contending parties, this documentary filmmaker in his first work of fiction (!) is here to remind us of other aspects of Slavic culture. His extraordinary grotesque vein, the sanguine depth of an exaggerated but exquisitely human theatricality. The dramatic Billy Wilder of THE AXE IN THE HAND, but especially the master of tragicomedy in STALAG 17 would not have minded the cruel comedy of the absurd in NO MAN'S LAND. But the ballet - and this is the merit of Danis Tanovic's film, and probably the reason for the Cannes ovation that heralds an international success for the public as well - is not only satirical. For while the three poor people trapped in the trenches are the subject of CNN coverage from halfway around the world (and this is not the film's most novel aspect), and the encounter between the multilingual blue helmets and the various ethnic groups at the Serb/Croat/Bosnian/Slovenian checkpoints is absolutely hilarious in its chilling absurdity, the film's perfect script avoids the trap of facile black humour.

Quite the opposite: on the edge of perfect acting (splendid Bosnian theatre actors; but also Mike Leigh's great Katrin Cartlidge, in the role of the assaultive but lucid anchorwoman), of a sunny photograph of an almost bucolic countryside that enhances the dramatic surrealism of the situation, the film recomposes itself on the drama. In the perfect balance of a surprisingly mature screenplay, between laughter and tears it acquires the weight of a meditation. And, in a beautiful finale that I will let you discover, a strong, disenchanted metaphor on the impotence faced by so-called men of good will.
