====================================================================

The Irishman is a long movie that goes by in a flash. Because it allows two privileged people, notoriously gifted with genius, to go back to their lives in three and a half hours.  The result was a special, perhaps unrepeatable mixture of a formula that has now been talked about. Now in their ninth film together, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese have finally made a dream come true in 2007: to illustrate the memories, taken from the book by the lawyer Charles Brandt who interrogated him for five years, by Frank Sheeran. Irish, one of the only two non-Italians among the twenty-five prominent figures of American organized crime of that time, fresh from the Second World War, at first a truck driver, apparently opaque, at the killer occasion for the Mafia.

It's the long existence of a taciturn Robert De Niro. Who abandons his famous sideways smile to become the man he trusts, the confidant in pajamas in the five-star suites, and finally the traitor of Jimmy Hoffa, president of the truckers' union, lord of the mafia as well as of the workers' struggle. It's three decades of American history that have not hesitated to touch on major dramas: such as the disappearance of President JFK and his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as the most certain hypothesis about the mystery left unanswered by the disappearance of Hoffa.

A film built on the passage of time, The Irishman is also a revisitation of a cinema destined to disappear: signed by Martin Scorsese, who had started to deal with those matters in 1973 with Mean Streets, but without filming mobsters until Goodfellas in 1990 and finally Casino' in 1995. The author of those two masterpieces couldn't have dreamt of a better opportunity when he was eighty years old: he grew up in the Catholic family, sharing with the protagonist of The Irishman the impossibility of redemption after experiencing guilt.

Ultimately far from the idea of the melancholy allusive remake, of an exciting sobriety that carefully avoids any expressive accentuation even in the rare episodes of physical violence, it is no coincidence that the film was returned to sender by all American production companies, until the arrival of Netflix. Rejecting their offers to shoot with contemporary stars at Pitt, Phoenix or DiCaprio (which would have paradoxically reduced the film's $200,000), Scorsese's insistence got the better of them. An extraordinary, restrained Joe Pesci as the caid Bufalino who will represent the Sheeran thread, Harvey Keitel and, especially for the first time with the director, a memorable Al Pacino over the top in the guise of Hoffa, direct the film into another dimension. In fact, there is a debate on the unprecedented digital "d-aging" process that would have allowed the 30-year-old wrinkles of the protagonists to be overturned: but, in its evidence, even this one ends up not only dissolving in the viewer's perspective. But to accentuate its power of identification.

In imitation of the talk of the mobsters, who carefully avoid calling things by their names, the film also highlights the private intimacy of the characters. Without avoiding the cliff of the public one, from the Kennedy drama to the clamorous incident at the Bay of Pigs. A film about betrayal, The Irishman is also about the impossibility of friendship, when violence has crossed every bank. About old age, when Sheeran realizes that his daughter who continues to reject him (Anna Paquin) is the only source of lucidity in that long story.
