C'è già tutto il genio e la sregolatezza dell'autore di IL CACCIATORE in questo esordio più comico che tragico, più svitato che serioso, assolutamente esilarante, tentato dalla violenza, ineluttabilmente risucchiato nella sua conclusione amara, mai convenzionale, eccome dilettevole. E la maestria, il fascino e la poesia di uno sguardo cinematografico (spesso esaltato e ancora più sovente equivocato nella tumultuosa carriera che seguirà) dall'inventiva e dal talento assolutamente ineguagliabile.

Sono gli attori e il tono disincantato ma non di certo allentato della loro direzione a strabiliare in questa road-movie di quattro più o meno balordi alla ricerca del colpo grosso (voluto da un Clint Eastwood sedotto dai precedenti di Cimino sceneggiatore). L' irresistibile incoscienza di Jeff Bridges, la sarcastica profondità di un ancora giovane Clint, l''assurdità lunare della coppia Kennedy - Lewis. Ma a far lievitare il tutto, a permettere che la farsa non degeneri e che la tragedia non pontifichi sono quei tagli sempre logici della costruzione di Cimino, quel suo modo di inserire la disinvoltura di questa faccenda nel rigore dei paesaggi e nel tono degli ambienti che sono quelli della grande tradizione del cinema americano. Impagabile.

There is already all the genius and unruliness of the author of THE DEER HUNTER in this debut that is more comic than tragic, more nutty than serious, absolutely hilarious, tempted by violence, ineluctably sucked into its bitter, never conventional, but delightful conclusion. And the skill, charm and poetry of a cinematic gaze (often exalted and even more often misunderstood in the tumultuous career that was to follow) of absolutely unequalled inventiveness and talent.

It is the actors and the disenchanted but certainly not slackened tone of their direction that amaze us in this road-movie of four more or less crooks in search of a big score (wanted by a Clint Eastwood seduced by Cimino's screenwriting background). The irresistible recklessness of Jeff Bridges, the sarcastic depth of a still young Clint, the lunar absurdity of the Kennedy-Lewis duo. But it is Cimino's logical cuts and his way of inserting the nonchalance of this affair into the rigour of the landscapes and the tone of the settings, which are those of the great tradition of American cinema, that make the whole thing soar, that prevent the farce from degenerating and the tragedy from pontificating. Priceless.
