""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

Sam Mendes is an original director, in some ways underestimated. Maybe we were forgetting, but seven years ago he signed, even for the largest audiences, one of the best James Bond ever, Skyfall. An intelligent screenplay, a twilight and neurotic story, imbued like its protagonists with surprising Freudian temptations. Without forgetting that the British director had even won an Oscar in 1999, with American Beauty, while later he was the author of more than interesting works such as Road to Perdition and Revolutionary Road.

Now, about the latter 1917, the biggest mistake would be to dismiss it a priori with a "still a film about the war fourteen-eighteen".  Mendes perhaps started off stimulated by an apparently "only" technical and aesthetic choice: that of shooting the odyssey of two humble corporals submerged in that historical slaughterhouse in real time, without detachments, in the course of a single sequence plan.

The task (with some caution) is carried out perfectly, but 1917 relies on a thread that is never trivially technical: on the contrary, it is charged with a progressively emotional and humanistic force. Up to the point where it ends, starting as it was in immersion in the most brutally claustrophobic reality of abstraction, idealism, expressive reflection. The two intense protagonists (and almost unknown George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman from the Games of Thrones series) are sent by their superiors on an obviously suicidal mission. To travel only about ten kilometers of that uncovered territory: perhaps abandoned by the German enemy, but still tormented by the human and material remains of the cataclysm just endured. In addition to the probable presence of some ambushed sniper. The purpose of the mission will be to prevent a thousand comrades threatened by an ambush.

But the skillful setting created by Roger Deakins (the great photographer of the Coen brothers starting with Burton Fink), or the musical commentary by Thomas Newman, progressively approach the protagonists and their vicissitudes with the same shrewdness and infinite lightness in the annotation used by Sam Mendes' camera to accompany the uninterrupted flow of the film's events. Perhaps winking at the rampant fantasy trend in vogue in Hollywood 1917, it is no longer a realistic film about the First World War (if it ever was): on the contrary, everything, on the contrary, is part of a fantasy universe, possibly indebted to the aesthetics of video games, which the look of the director (and the director of photography) progressively accentuate.

The desperate and certainly not unpublished one painted in 1917 thus becomes a praiseworthy, heroic, and generous undertaking; inasmuch as it is aimed at giving the viewer the idea of how equally vain and prophetic it is. Preceded and followed, as we know, in the bowels of unstoppable tragedies; by size, but not by endless warnings.
