====================================================================

It was an extraordinary revelation, that of the Russian (Sokurov's pupil) Kantemir Balagov at Cannes 2017, where he would have overwhelmingly deserved the Caméra d'Or awarded to the best debutant. Tesnota was inspired by a news story that happened in 1998 in a small town in his native Caucasus. From the particular intimacy of a Jewish family, the couple formed by his eldest son and his fiancée are suddenly kidnapped. Rather than turn to the police, the parents decide to rely on their community to collect the ransom. But the reunion ends in nothing: and it is then the youngest daughter Ilana to sacrifice herself by marrying the wealthy neighbor?

Despite appearances, Tesnota is not then the story of a kidnapping, but of an emancipation. Thanks to Darya Zhovner, a formidable tomboy on the way to becoming a woman, more and more centralized in the drama. The twenty-eight-year-old director obviously puts his own spin on it: the most intimate tensions, the intensity devoid of any aesthetic complacency with which the filmmaker underlines the claustrophobic material situation, but even more psychological and finally social, grip the relationships of the different characters. The violence that arises from misery, the anti-Semitic racism that progressively emerges from that powerful vision also documentary, comes to tear that unknown corner on the borders of Chechnya. The constant close-ups, the shadows that spread as soon as the flashes of light bring moments of consolation are forever impressed in the memory.
