* * * *  BURNING (BEONING),  by Lee Chang-dong, with Steven Yeun, Yoo Ah-In, Joong-ok Lee (South Korea, 2018)

Available in DVD/Blu-ray or VOD/streaming etc.        Review date: September 17, 2018

Ignominantly forgotten by the Cannes 2018 jury, this is the sixth feature by the South Korean director who has created nothing but wonders over time (how many can we say the same?): OASIS (2002), SECRET SUNSHINE (2007), POETRY (2010),... And now this sublime BURNING.....

In a film in which the listlessness of certainties is continuously transformed into poetic energy is the story of Jong-soo, a young salesman, an aspiring writer, who accidentally meets Hae-mi, the neighbour he then considered ugly. Now, things have changed, she indulges, he falls in love. She leaves on a trip; not without asking him to take care of the cat in his absence. She returns, at last: but in the company of Ben, rich and mysterious. Ben with the Porsche Carrera, Jong-soo with the broken-down hatchback.

Against the backdrop of a landscape of indefinable, unsettling beauty, the passion melts into a sweet, twilight anger that will end up being absorbed forever in our memories. The art of the unspoken slips from sentimental drama to the thriller of ambiguity, from the quiet chronicle of everyday life to social malaise. Only then does the poetic veil tear into a deserted island sequence: in front of his two men Hae-mi undresses, and dances against the background of the sun disappearing on the horizon.

The echo of nature then blurs into one of the most admirable improvisations of Miles Davis while the ardor of sensuality borders on melancholy.
