Nel 1928 a Hollywood, un generale russo in esilio costretto ormai a fare la comparsa, interpreta il ruolo avuto nel 1917 nelle vesti di comandante in capo dell'armata dello zar. E, come non bastasse, in un film diretto dall'ex rivoluzionario Eric von Sternberg...

Costruito su un lungo flashback iniziale di quanto era accaduto dieci anni prima, seguito da un ritorno alla situazione presente e ad un finale particolarmente significativo dal punto di vista emotivo ed espressivo, CREPUSCOLO DI GLORIA (THE LAST COMMAND) permette ad Emil Jannings di essere il primo vincitore di un Oscar per il Miglior attore.

Quinto film muto americano di von Sternberg che segue di un anno il più celebre UNDERWORLD,  possiede non pochi passaggi di un'enfasi melodrammatica che fatica talvolta nel resistere al tempo. Ma ne risaltano altri indimenticabili; come quell'idea, per quei tempi impensabile, del "film nel film".

von Sternberg's fifth American silent film, a year after the more famous UNDERWORLD, has many passages with a melodramatic emphasis that sometimes struggles to stand the test of time. But other unforgettable ones stand out, such as the idea, unthinkable at the time, of the "film within a film".
