____________________________________________________________________________

We became aware of Adam McKay in 2015, thanks to a film that already starred an impressive Christian Bale; and after the series of comedies perfectly in tune with the times that the director had directed THE BIG SHORT was a truthful chronicle of a financier wrongly believed to be a Wall Street nutcase. He was mocked in 2005 by the entire banking establishment because he had decided to bet on the arrival of a Great Crisis, ignored by all. We sang the praises of THE BIG SHORT, perhaps saying that "it's not that we understand everything", but since then, much has remained in our memories of that bold reflection on the famous property bubble.

Three years later, McKay turns his gaze, always sharp, original and revealing, perhaps not always very easy, on another subject that is mysterious in many ways, the figure of Dick Cheney. A politician who is not necessarily one of the best known: but who for 25 years, since the day after the attack on the Twin Towers on 11 September, had upset the image and the "useless" role of the vice-president in American politics.

As the director says: 'he did everything he could to avoid the spotlight, but he acquired immense power, changing the history not only of the United States, but of the whole world. Twice he was caught driving drunk, but twelve years later he was the head of the White House staff. The president was Bush junior, but Cheney was now at the helm.

The long, meticulous narrative of VICE can thus be traced back to the director's thoughts: the parable of the man behind the scenes who seemed ordinary and certainly not clean; but who governed that America, convinced it to attack Iraq, and consequently allowed the birth of ISIS. And finally led the country to elect a Trump. This is a question that the spectator will have asked himself during the screening of the film and that Vice will certainly have avoided updating... McKay composes his dramaturgy with an originality that is anything but banal. The film's interest, but also at times its narrative limitation, is organised precisely in its continuous temporal division. In the chronology between past, present and future, as well as in the alienating alternation between satire and drama.

On the relative but eloquent impassibility of that mimetic Cheney, the opportunist surrounded by the political circus that Christian Bale gives us back, swollen by several dozen kilos. But which serves the filmmaker to translate the ambiguity of that pursuit of power. Which is already hidden in the film's title: "Vice" in the sense of substitute; but also of vicious, turbid, more than Hamletic.
