Presented in competition at the 2018 Turin Film Festival, THE GUILTY (Den skyldige) is Danish director Gustav Möller's debut feature and one of the big surprises.

Alone against everyone, mobile phone in one hand, fighting evil. The actor, Jacob Cedergren, is extremely significant: but also because he evolves psychologically within a framework from which the director has eliminated every superfluous sign. With surprising intuition; miraculously avoiding any exercise in style.

The darkness, the incision of the night invades an action film that is charged with emotional strength, with a humanitarian meaning that grows with unstoppable force and is at the same time normal, feasible, credible. Attention to every detail, even the invisible ones, from which an unprecedented trail to the truth can emerge. With the prolonged silences that in turn take on a meaning of their own, the very close-ups, silent, then translate the surfacing of a human understanding; a new path that emerges so minutely, suffered even more harshly.

All through that telephone, in the foreground, which emerges from the darkness; together with the fatigue of trying to understand. In an admirable and not only suspenseful first feature. While understanding, knowledge focuses and spreads over the sounds, hypnotic. Vision being, at that point, practically excluded.
