Ottantotto anni, trentasettesimo lungometraggio da regista; e in The Mule ancora protagonista.

Eighty-eight years old, thirty-seventh feature film as a director; and in The Mule still the protagonist. Although, in 2008 in the splendid Gran Torino, he announced that it would be his last appearance as an actor in a film directed by him. Here he is instead the protagonist, for the twenty-third time, in this kind of relaxed thriller: a floriculturist, ruined by the advent of the Internet, who at his age, but I wouldn't swear without his knowledge, becomes a "mule". Which in English also means "slipper," but also someone who is a drug mule...

With The Mule Clint Eastwood thus moves away from his trilogy on heroism, which began with the tiring American Sniper in 2014 but continued with the modern, surprising Sully two years later; concluded, finally, with the hurried 3.17 pm - Attack on the train in 2017. Now, here he is inventing, with a wing stroke perhaps unexpected even by his most faithful admirers, behind the appearances of a film only tender and funny, something that comes to merge wonderfully with that American landscape with vast sunny expanses that is the background.

The film combines themes that the filmmaker has already dealt with, such as the perverted invasion of money, the will of atonement (although here one can also doubt whether it is totally sincere...): but the old Hollywood hero still manages to translate them into a light and semi-serious tone. So, while gluing himself to a new and sweetly ambiguous character, Clint ends up juxtaposing the film with Mystic River, Unforgiven, Gran Torino: many jewels in which the filmmaker has brought the actor's irreplaceable presence to the intuition of a glance through the camera in a luminous, never harmonious way.

All in the background of a blunt Trumpian ambiguity? Perhaps: but all diluted by the tone of that nostalgic character, even fragile, never cynical. From his pleasure in letting go in front of his camera, curved and never exhausted, finally anti-heroic; perfectly framed as it is by the infallible measure of the editing combinations.

From that particular attitude of revealing one's inner self; of never being prevented from revealing so many losing aspects of one's character. Of course, there is also some goodness in the finale of The Mule. But how can we not forgive him, that Earl Stone who, during his more or less unconscious comings and goings between El Paso and Chicago, watered down his melancholy in the traditional musical backgrounds that have always belonged to him? This time they are delightfully country, even if it is easy to guess behind the hand of a Latin jazz musician like Arturo Sandoval. Another coup dedicated to Clint, to his apparently modest masterpiece of senescence.
