HOTEL BY THE RIVER (GANGBYUN HOTEL) DI HONG SANG-SOO: LOCARNO 2018 SI SBAGLIA SULL'ORO

HOTEL BY THE RIVER (GANGBYUN HOTEL) BY HONG SANG-SOO: LOCARNO 2018 IS WRONG ABOUT GOLD

It brings good things to the Locarno Film Festival, Hong Sang-soo. The South Korean director is famous not only for the quality of his work, but also for a prolificacy that has led him to his twenty-sixth feature film in a twenty-year career. And vice versa: recognised by Locarno in 2013 for Best Director for Our Sunhi, then even with the Golden Leopard for Right Now, Wrong Then two years later, Hong Sang-soo has returned once again with this exquisite Hotel By The River.

As is almost always the case with these reappearances, he didn't win as much as he deserved, rewarded "only" for the Male Performance of lead actor Ki Joobong. However, his film is the most touching, profound and also imbued with humour seen on the screens of this year's summer festival. A cinema that is never ordinary, so essential that it always reminds us that the director's career was launched by the emotion provoked by the cinema of the masters Ozu, Rohmer, Bresson: as well as the painting of Cezanne.

It is interesting to observe, however, how much Hong Sang-soo's cinema continues to refine itself. It is always minimalist, but ever closer to the life of ordinary mortals; very attentive to stylistic choices, to moments of detached refinement, as well as to the libations of its talented protagonists. But it is also absolutely happy to reach a dimension in which grace and reflection come together almost miraculously.

The dazzling backdrop against which the story of Hotel by the River is set like a precious stone is enough to testify to this. An apparently family story, but in fact one of moving generality. That of a mature poet who, perhaps feeling his end approaching, summons his two sons (not exactly on the same wavelength) to no man's land. An enchanted and indefinite space: as much as a hotel can be, luxurious but temporary, significantly located along the current of an immense river, surrounded by snow, which flows slowly, in apparent indifference.

Sooner or later, the two young hotel guests will also have to face this current. Apparently busy soothing the recent sentimental disillusionment of the one rather than interacting with the lazy vagueness of the two males. In Hong Sang-soo's delicate black and white, however, he allows the elderly poet a last, tender and burlesque stroke of geniality: complimenting the two young women once, twice, three times, over and over again on their inaccessible beauty. An extremely human and serene story of a farewell, Hotel by the River thus restores all its dignity to an art form that is perhaps getting lost.
