* * * (*)  SORRY WE MISSED YOU,   by Ken Loach, with Kris Hitchen, Debbie Honeywood, Rhys Stone (UK, 2019)

After the splendid I, DANIEL BLAKE the over eighty year old master of contemporary social cinema has struck again. This time with a story of uberisation. Recent vocabulary, but with a meaning now rooted in our era: which, as the dictionary now explains, defines a transformation taking place in the stable and continuous services that were typical of the traditional economy. When these are now progressively replaced by activities that occur only at the request of the consumer.

Sucede then to Ricky, impeccable employed near one of the numerous enterprises that supply to domicile how much purchased via Internet. Soon, the illusion of becoming master of himself; but at first forced to get into debt to buy a van. And therefore equally annihilated by the perverse delivery times, impossible to respect, calculated as they are by merciless algorithms.

A situation on which all of Ken Loach's cinema has always built itself: the wall, impassable, that ends up interposing itself between the animated protagonist with the best intentions and the goal he had set himself. A social and professional cross-section that ends up, once again, corrupting the most intimate relationships within the family.

To say that Ricky's young family suffers from inexorable progression then becomes an understatement. A social hypocrisy, one of the many denounced in fifty years of chronicles by the working class world in the unrepeatable career of the British filmmaker. An imposture that already perfects to the marvel that "sorry, we missed you". The title of the film, which is limited to what is printed on the card to be pasted on the entrance door of any absent recipients.
