===================================================================

In the nutty genre, it's hard to do better. Starting with the stories: that of Drugo (in English "friend": first used by cowboys to indicate who, coming from the East, was unable to ride a horse; then by hippies, surfers, skate-boarders...), the laziest man in L.A., sleepy former professional looser, unemployed, eternally in Bermuda shorts and dressing gown because of the notoriously temperate climate, discretely senile from joints and a life spent at the bowling alley. His namesake, Lebowski, is mistaken for whom they come to pee on the carpet at home to spite him: a millionaire with liquidity problems, who he intends to solve by inventing the kidnapping of a young and bulky wife. Of his friend Walter (the formidable John Goodman), another character inherited from the 50s and 60s, a strong man with a tender-hearted Jewish convert in lost time, totally fused by the impossibility of entering a viewpoint other than that of the Vietnam veteran, all assault on the hill in the jungle and now I'll fix them for you. Of an infinity of characters who seem to regenerate at every turn of the film: a trio of Germanic rockers, self-styled nihilists, authors of truculent vilenesses that in fact do not exist; a gay hidalgo swaying in a bowling alley wrapped in a lilac suit (John Turturro, in a very tasty cameo); an avant-garde painter with an obviously nymphomaniac tendency; a porn producer played by none other than Ben Gazzara; a taxi driver who makes our guy fall definitively into his paranoid trip leaving him on the street because he doesn't appreciate the music of the Eagles; finally, a whole series of second roles that end up composing an absolutely hilarious mosaic of caricatures.

Cinema of nonsense: but up to a certain point. Because that of the two terrible brothers of American cinema follows a recognisable track; and makes THE BIG LEBOWSKI the continuation of a more consequent discourse than it appears at first sight. Not only because - as in AROZONA JUNIOR, as in FARGO - it is still a fake kidnapping, and the tragicomic vicissitudes of those who have to collect the ransom: not only because a genre is always adapted (here a Chandler's detective story like the mythical THE BIG SLEEP, even if intended all upside down) to make it not a homage: but a reflection on its meanings in a clear postmodern intention. Not only that, finally, because it tries to get out, as soon as it can, from the seed: and to merge two apparently irreconcilable shows, such as the detective story and the musical.

But because the portraits of the two Coen brothers, behind the light-heartedness of their sometimes disjointed irony, are increasingly trying to represent an America that, in strokes of mediocrity, ends up degenerating into madness: that of the eternally blessed rufflers, of the miserable disguised as arrivals. Characters sketched with a sort of love-hate: which, if they allow an overview of debilitated clumsy people of undoubted comedy, also lead to a further critical discourse, within those period recreations, of pastiches of a genre that the two brothers prefer.

Seen in this sense, however, does THE BIG LEBOWSKI necessarily represent a progress compared to the previous one, FARGO?  That one, immersed as it was in a perfectly delineated dimension, the Nebraska of its snowy perspectives, of its inhabitants' trailing speech, of the psychologies clearly excavated, had a coherence, a human deepening, a soul not only dramaturgic, which made the most senseless findings of the authors exemplary and significant. Here fun and sympathy are assured. I would say more: the supreme pleasure of seeing the brazen and iconoclastic invention triumph over the prudence, calculation and spectacular conformism that distinguishes current American production.

Perhaps, from a creative genius like that of the Coen brothers, it is also legitimate to expect something more than a string of absolutely amazing characters, but half of whom will be forgotten on the street as soon as they are proposed? Of skilful dreamlike evocations, Busby Berkeley ballets, which end in an exercise in style that is a bit foreign to the body of the film?  But at the same time of amazing dialogues of corrosive intelligence that dissolve into the fun caused by an irresistible cast. While waiting for a film that builds on the fascinating structure of MILLER'S CROSSING, the alienating atmospheres of BURTON FINK, the social and psychological adherence of FARGO, let's enjoy the disrespectful sarcasm, the wild, so healthy fantasy of the tone of THE BIG LEBOWSKI.
