==================================================================

At the age of 15 Victor decided, more and more tenaciously, to become Lara. The father, the doctor, the psychologist do everything possible to accompany him on a journey that cinema, literature and many other expressions have already described. In Girl, however, it happens differently: were it not for the fact that in order to satisfy her ever more convinced need, Lara will choose to accompany her in a discipline already fierce, hard and demanding in itself as that of classical dance. There is then a statement by Lucas Dhont, the 26-year-old Flemish director from Ghent at his first feature film, which perfectly translates the film: "I soon realized how much cinema could exert a physical effect on someone".

Many are already bringing him closer to the best known of the early filmmakers around, Xavier Dolan. A gamble perhaps premature; but in the meantime Girl has already won not only the award for Best Actor in the Certain Regard for her truly extraordinary protagonist, Victor Polster; but also that Caméra d'Or destined for the best Cannes debut ever, which has often heralded enviable careers.

Girl is in all cases a film that is imprinted in the memory, off the beaten track in part known and usually beaten in its genre. It's a multiple journey, terribly tiring; but Lucas Dhont manages to film it with a sort of sweetness, which doesn't only come from the sometimes golden hues of his film. The transgender path, physical and even more interior, stretches out between the attentions of an affectionate family intimacy, which the director succeeds so well; as much as the one, in some ways more surprising, between the dosages of hormones and the appropriate psychological reflections by the medical body. All of this about the traditional, so inconstant passage from adolescence to adulthood: that Victor Polster transmits with a adherence, better still, a transparency, that blurs wonderfully into the ambiguity of his own reflection. To lead to the more physical but progressively as invasive fatigue of another kind of transition: the one that leads from the dream of a liberating lightness to the exhausting reality of training to become the prima ballerina, the étoile.

Of a demure sunny transparency, but at the same time stubborn intransigence in investigating the intimate, that of Lucas Dhont and his interpreter Victor Polster represents one of the most stimulating beginnings of recent seasons.
