Sconvolta, l’attrice convince allora l’amico ...

====================================================================

The start of the last film shot, despite the prohibitions, by the great Iranian filmmaker is immediately perceived as a formidable punch in the stomach. Filmed in the foreground as she approaches the camera, a teenager sends a desperate appeal to the famous actress Behnaz Jafari: since she does not answer his calls via cell phone, she will hang herself from a noose already set at the exit of a cave.

Upset, the actress then convinces her friend... Jafar Panahi to accompany her in the secret of a car. And here we are, therefore, soon found in the same space as the splendid Tehran Taxi, Panahi's masterpiece before Three Faces. This explains only in part how the filmmaker (who was prevented from going to Cannes last May, where his film was shown four days after his compatriot Farhadi's) manages to evade the impositions and prohibitions. Six years of border at home and twenty of prohibition to shoot.

Will it be a suicide or a fake news, an authentic reality, or an expedient due to a technological, cinematographic invention? All this knowing how in Iran the art of film-making is highly respected on the one hand; on the other hand, it is opposed as a disruptor of the social order... To get to the bottom of it, the two of them will have no choice but to head towards Marzieh, one of those lost villages in the mountains, the favorite of a filmmaker who so loved those dimensions of the soul, Abbas Kirostami. If that kind of space can only bring to mind the background of so many masterpieces by the author of E la vita continua or Il sapore della ciliegia, Panahi immediately embraces another tone. Splendidly rigorous in the images, certainly not indifferent to a possible latent tragedy. But much more nonchalant, at times almost humorous, delightfully free.

We are at the homage, but not beyond: from that moment on, it will be Panahi's tone that will impose itself, and the contrast between the great popularity enjoyed by the actress Benaziah Jafari in the population of archaic simplicity and a permanent distrust. Which the director, thanks to his insolent irony in his observation of the society that surrounds him, manipulates to marvel.
