Richard Jewell's is a true story. Above all not to be forgotten, were it not because it completes, and in many ways perfects, the series begun on the theme that has become increasingly dear to Clint Eastwood, heroism. At first the somewhat ambiguous, and also cinematographically laborious one: about the famous sniper Chris Kyle in the Iraq war, in American Sniper in 2014. Followed, however, after only two years by Sully's modern, surprising hero: the simple, credible pilot of US Airlines, who stormed onto the Hudson, saving the 155 passengers of a damaged civilian flight.

In 2017 it will be the turn of the attack on the train in the rather hasty 15.17 - Attack on the train. But today, after the splendid parenthesis of the tender and nostalgic The Mule, here is the author of the masterpieces The Ruthless, Gran Torino, Mystic River following (at the age of ninety, with his forty-second film as director...) not only what seemed to be a trilogy by now finished. It is the story of Richard Jewell, more similar, to tell the truth, to that of an anti-hero: who doesn't even seem to need public gratitude for his acts of faith. The universe that revolves around him represents the coherent, even evolutionary dimension with respect to the previous reflections we know of the author.

Nothing shouted, it is not part of Eastwood's cinema. Jewell (played by a very original Paul Walter Hauser in his quietness) is the overweight thirty-year-old who still lives with his mother; but he is a security guard, convinced that the common good is always to be protected. He will be hired in Atlanta on the occasion of the 1996 Olympics; discovering before a concert the backpack full of nails and the explosive. They will find it hard to believe him, but the tragedy in the rampant crowd will be at least scaled down. The common man, who has always been so dear to Eastwood, will then enjoy three days of popularity: before the vacuity at the borders of crime by the FBI, the senseless invasion of the media avalanche, the interested vanity of the politicians who are behind let that obsequious observer of the law get a glimpse of the viewer, the perspective of the electric chair seems simply absurd (because Hitchcockianly knows how things went).

The increasingly ferocious and cruel doubts, insinuated by the increasingly strong and foolish powers against Richard Jewell, then follow, in their exponential flight forward, those equally absurd and therefore perverse of a System, with which Sully Sullenberg, the pilot of the homonymous film starring Tom Hanks, was already confronted. Certainly, in the end, Sully was rehabilitated; but the generous Jewell, far from gratitude, was granted only the faculty to disappear from the memories. Just as his lawyer's assistant had predicted: "Where I come from, when they accuse someone, it means they are innocent. How the last of the Great Hollywood Old Men feels about this is a gamble.
