I due locali: volenterosi, quanto burlescamente approssimativi e, all'occorrenza, sbrigativamente brutali.

====================================================================

Filmed in 2003, released in Europe in 2004, Memories of Murder is Bong Joon-ho's second feature film. A film that not only revealed to the world a new director, but that dramatically renewed in new atmospheres a genre explored for a long time as the detective story. It will be followed by a second filmic sensation, this time with a maliciously treated monster, The Host in 2006. And since then a career at the top for Bong: with the suspense drama Mother in 2009, then the science fiction of Snowpiercer followed by the ecology of Okya, both presented at Cannes. Finally, in 2019, the dazzling Palme d'Or at the splendid Parasite.

Memories already reveals one of the secrets of the incomparable charm of Bong's cinema: the art of surprising, practically disconcerting the spectator. In an era that has long been inflated by a sharp consumption of the image, the film in fact takes up a well-known and authentic news story that took place in Korea between 1986 and 1991. When ten women were raped and murdered around a small provincial village, always following an immutable practice. And without ever even being able to identify who the serial killer was.

Reopening the case twelve years later, Bong Joon-jo was then indulging for the first time with what we know today is a constant in his films: the overlapping of different film genres, the breaks in tone, the search for an atmosphere (and therefore a purpose) further than the apparent one. With a miraculous fluidity, the tragic and the grotesque, the reviving and the violent. But progressively, always respecting an exalting formal mastery (the photography is by Kim Hyung-ku who will leave Bong after The Host, but a year ago he filmed another wonder, Hong Sang-soo's Hotel by the River); a vision that, almost overturning, becomes more and more analytical, revealing but at the same time unsolvable.

Reflection, at first psychological, then political. In fact, it accompanies the three policemen who should solve the case. The two are willing, as well as burlesquely approximate and, if necessary, brutal. Plus a third, the investigator who came to the rescue from Seoul, apparently more rational and up to the situation: in fact, he too was destined to get lost in the country chaos of a South Korea that is increasingly in disarray. A frightened country, prey to student revolts, uncertainties and ignorance induced by the military regime, plagued by fears of a conflict with North Korea.

In an initial picture that is accompanied by the laughter of children in the campaign, the initial burlesque humor seems to mock the incompetence of those in power. But at each further event is a feeling of distrust that spreads, corruption gradually emerges, the truth moves away. To the point of leaving the spectator only to confront Evil.
