Non è che si capisca tutto, in questa cronaca (veridica) su un finanziere a torto ritenuto svitato da Wall Street (formidabile Christian Bale) che, nel 2005, decise di scommettere - deriso dall'intero establishment bancario - sull'arrivo della Grande Crisi che nessuno vedeva sopraggiungere. Ma, chi giura di decifrare a fondo le elucubrazioni (per non dire del gergo) predilette dai guru della finanza? E quanti non scommetterebbero sul fatto che questa zona grigia della comprensione per il comune mortale non faccia parte delle loro strategie? Ecco una ragione, allora, per giustificare la scelta adottata degli autori della brillante, quanto a volte precipitosamente nebulosa LA GRANDE SCOMMESSA. Fra i più sorprendenti apparsi negli ultimi tempi, il film ha forse la sfortuna di giungere dopo i pochi filmati che già hanno avuto l'ardire di frugare fra le pieghe più o meno chiarite della bolla immobiliare creatasi negli Anni 2000: documentari come INSIDE JOB o CLEVELAND CONTRO WALL STREET del nostro Jean-Stéphan Bron, fiction come IL LUPO DI WALL STREET (non il miglior Scorsese) o l'ottimo MARGIN CALL di J.C. Chandor. Ma il merito di questa sfida, dietro la facciata disinvolta d'audace colpo dei soliti ignoti, è di percorrere dalla burla all'indignazione dei percorsi ritenuti da sempre azzardati. Denunciando l'avidità di un sistema che ancora non ha cessato di coinvolgerci; e il cinismo, per usare un eufemismo, di certe caste ritenute intoccabili. La degenerazione insensata del credito ipotecario (gli ormai leggendari subprime), il calcolo perverso delle agenzie di rating del credito, la supponenza degli analisti che fa dire a uno dei personaggi del film:  le grandi banche non possono essere cosi stupide. E il coinvolgimento finale dello Stato; che significa dei cittadini tutti. Autore finora di commedie burlesche, Adam McKay affronta con perizia questa svolta anche nei momenti drammatici: la visione disperata dei sei milioni di cittadini rimasti senza l'abitazione, degli otto milioni che perdono il lavoro, degli uffici disastrati della Lehman Brothers. Gioca sull'abituale bravura degli attori americani (oltre a Bale, perfetti sono Steve Carell e Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt o Marisa Tomey), sceglie un frammentato ma adeguato stile pop-televisivo per legare le sequenze dialogate, inventa paradossali siparietti, come quello del celebre ristoratore che spiega la cucina del pesce per esemplificare le più incomprensibili delle manipolazioni finanziarie. Mai difficile, mai arido, come il tema lasciava temere, spesso divertente (e il successo di pubblico ne testimonia) LA GRANDE SCOMMESSA è un film anche agghiacciante. Del quale è forse utile non comprendere tutti i dettagli. Ma intuirne a fondo la morale; poiché è proprio di morale che si tratta.

It is not that we understand everything in this (true) account of a financier wrongly considered a Wall Street nutcase (formidable Christian Bale) who, in 2005, decided to bet - derided by the entire banking establishment - on the arrival of the Great Crisis that no one saw coming. But who swears to decipher the lucubrations (not to mention the jargon) favoured by financial gurus? And how many would not bet on the fact that this grey area of understanding for ordinary mortals is not part of their strategies? Here is one reason, then, to justify the choice made by the authors of the brilliant, if sometimes hastily nebulous, THE BIG SHORT. One of the most surprising films to appear in recent times, the film perhaps has the misfortune of arriving after the few films that have already had the audacity to rummage through the more or less clarified folds of the real estate bubble created in the 2000s: documentaries such as INSIDE JOB or CLEVELAND AGAINST WALL STREET by Jean-Stéphan Bron, fiction such as THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (not the best Scorsese) or the excellent MARGIN CALL by J.C. Chandor. But the merit of this challenge, behind the nonchalant façade of the usual unknowns, is that it runs from mockery to indignation along paths that have always been considered risky. Denouncing the greed of a system that has not yet ceased to involve us; and the cynicism, to use a euphemism, of certain castes considered untouchable. The senseless degeneration of mortgage credit (the now legendary subprime), the perverse calculation of the credit rating agencies, the arrogance of the analysts that makes one of the film's characters say: the big banks cannot be so stupid. And the final involvement of the state, which means all citizens. The author of burlesque comedies up to now, Adam McKay skilfully tackles this turn of events even in the dramatic moments: the desperate vision of the six million citizens left homeless, the eight million who lose their jobs, the ruined offices of Lehman Brothers. It plays on the usual bravura of the American actors (in addition to Bale, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt and Marisa Tomey are perfect), chooses a fragmented but appropriate pop-television style to tie the dialogue sequences together, and invents paradoxical skits, such as the famous restaurateur explaining the cooking of fish to exemplify the most incomprehensible of financial manipulations. Never difficult, never dry, as the theme would lead one to fear, often amusing (and the success of the public testifies to this), THE BIG SHORT is also a chilling film. Of which it is perhaps useful not to understand all the details. But it is useful to understand the moral of the film, because that is what it is about.
