Ai molti che di recente sono stati conquistati dal fascino straordinario di SHAME, per non dire del sex-symbol per eccellenza degli schermi attuali Michael Fassbender, non dovrà sfuggire l'uscita in DVD di HUNGER, il sensazionale esordio alla regia di Steve McQueen che aveva sconvolto il Festival di Cannes nel 2008.

Denuncia fortissima di un film politico e storico che si è impresso indelebilmente nelle memorie, e non solo per la violenza della sua rappresentazione, quello dell'inglese fino ad allora "soltanto" videoartista. Desideroso, certo, di rimuovere macigni di colpe nazionali, legate alle inimmaginabili violenze perpetrate nelle prigioni dell'Irlanda del Nord all'inizio degli Anni Ottanta, quando Bobby Sands decideva di passare oltre la “resistenza dei vestiti e dell'igiene”. A quello sciopero della fame che lo avrebbe condotto ad una morte infine mediatizzata.

Procedimento lontano da ogni concessione alla fantasia e alla sfumatura, che Steve McQueen applica indicibilmente alla sofferenza del corpo. E alla quale si afferma immediatamente come uno dei cineasti più intimamente legati.

Raramente la violenza della sopraffazione e dell'umiliazione imposta da un individuo a un suo simile (e, aggiungiamo, vicino di casa) è stata mostrata con tanta cruda, a tratti quasi insostenibile eloquenza. Una violenza che non è mai strumentale, per non dire gratuita: quasi astratta nel suo terribile realismo, e quindi universale ed eterna. Come una maledizione che torni incessantemente ad accompagnarsi alla società. Anche quando coinvolge i fratelli; anche quando si appella ai pretesti di sempre, le religioni, le ideologie.

Those who have recently been won over by the extraordinary charm of SHAME, not to mention the sex symbol par excellence of today's screens, Michael Fassbender, should not miss the DVD release of HUNGER, Steve McQueen's sensational directorial debut that shocked the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.

A strong denunciation of a political and historical film that has been indelibly imprinted in memories, and not only for the violence of its representation, that of the Englishman who until then was "only" a video artist. Certainly, he wanted to remove boulders of national guilt, linked to the unimaginable violence perpetrated in Northern Ireland prisons at the beginning of the 1980s, when Bobby Sands decided to go beyond the resistance of clothes and hygiene. To that hunger strike that would lead him to a death that was finally mediatised.

A procedure far removed from any concession to fantasy and nuance, which Steve McQueen unspeakably applies to the suffering of the body. And to which he immediately asserts himself as one of the filmmakers most intimately linked.

Rarely has the violence of oppression and humiliation imposed by an individual on his fellow man (and, we might add, neighbour) been shown with such raw, at times almost unbearable eloquence. A violence that is never instrumental, not to say gratuitous: almost abstract in its terrible realism, and therefore universal and eternal. Like a curse that returns incessantly to accompany society. Even when it involves brothers and sisters; even when it appeals to the usual pretexts, religions and ideologies.
