Uno dei film più celebri, assieme a FRONTE DEL PORTO e EAST OF EDEN di Elia Kazan. Anche se forse fra quelli dove la grande mano registica di Kazan é relativamente sfruttata. Le grandi opere sue rimangono SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, vibrante e sensuale, il lirico WILD RIVER o, fra le più recenti, AMERICA, AMERICA (IL RIBELLE DELL'ANATOLIA) e l'ultimo, scandalosamente ignorato, I VISITATORI. Un mazzetto invidiabile di capolavori.

UN TRAM CHE SI CHIAMA DESIDERIO é celebrato anche perché allora (1951) fu considerato un film spregiudicato: oggi ne abbiamo visto di ben altre. Rimane quello che era già ai suoi tempi. Un film d'attori spregiudicatamente viscerale, ma girato da un grande direttore di attori. Se Vivien Leigh appare un po' datata nel suo gioco, il Marlon Brando fresco, ma già immenso delle proprie esperienze dell'"Actors Studio" rimane memorabile, ma senza dimenticare la giustezza di Karl Malden.

Rimane il fatto che, a quei livelli di asticella, dei molti film ricavati da opere di Tennessee Williams é questo uno di quelli che maggiormente risentono dei sospetti di zavorra retorica e decadente del mitico drammaturgo americano.
