Tra la bellezza trascendentale e da alcuni ritenuta sospetta di PRIMAVERA, ESTATE, AUTUNNO… ed il capolavoro dell'assurdo e della solitudine FERRO 3, l'incredibilmente prolifico regista coreano aveva girato questa vicenda, al tempo stesso deliziosamente lunare e terribilmente concreta, di innocenza e colpevolezza, responsabilità e redenzione. La storia, eternamente in bilico fra le frontiere incerte del bene e del male delle angosce di un padre confrontato a due adolescenti che si prostituiscono per pagarsi un viaggio in Europa. Ma pure, assai più in un'ottica buddista, per donare gioia oltre che amore: tanto che la seconda, una volta scomparsa l'amica restituisce i soldi ai clienti “poiché sarà allora come se i sentimenti potessero vivere di un'andata ed un ritorno”.

Girato in dieci giorni (!) che ne sottolineano l'urgenza e in parte anche una certa irresolutezza, LA SAMARITANA conferma la forza ed il fascino della mescola prepotente fra vena poetica e attrazione alle preoccupazioni umane e sociali che caratterizza sempre più il cinema di Kim Ki-duk. Interrogazione meno estetizzante di certi suoi affreschi, più accorata di altri suoi spensierati acquerelli , questo è uno schizzo che gli ammiratori del regista coreano non dovranno lasciarsi sfuggire.

Between the transcendental and by some considered suspect beauty of SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN and the masterpiece of absurdity and solitude IRON 3, the incredibly prolific Korean director had shot this story, at once delightfully lunar and terribly concrete, of innocence and guilt, responsibility and redemption. The story, eternally poised between the uncertain borders of good and evil of the anguish of a father confronted with two teenagers who prostitute themselves to pay for a trip to Europe. But also, much more from a Buddhist point of view, to give joy as well as love: so much so that the latter, once her friend has disappeared, gives the money back to her clients, as it will then be as if feelings could live on a round trip.

Filmed in ten days (!) which underline its urgency and in part also a certain irresolution, THE SAMARITAN confirms the strength and charm of the overbearing mix of poetic vein and attraction to human and social concerns that increasingly characterises Kim Ki-duk's cinema. A less aesthetic questioning than some of his frescoes, more heartfelt than some of his other carefree watercolours, this is a sketch that admirers of the Korean director should not miss.
