Padre di famiglia assurdamente rapito (forse perchè in preda ai fumi dell'alcol di riso coreano?) , sequestrato per quindici anni in una cella, con uno schermo televisivo come sola compagnia. Per ragioni, altrettanto ignote della sua detenzione, viene infine liberato: scoprirà che all'origine di tanto accanimento c'è la vendetta un vecchio compagno di scuola, l' "old boy" del titolo appunto.

VENGEANCE, 2000) arrischiava di mandare in tilt una platea pur navigata ad ogni sorta di provocazione post-moderna. Bisogna capirla: denti estirpati con un martello, spazzolini da denti usati come strumenti letali, molluschi ingoiati vivi e derivazioni sanguinolente varie. Con l'iperbole assunta come denominatore comune ma mai incoerente, la giubilazione visiva e sonora che attinge al mito ed al fantastico, nei suoi momenti migliori

OLD BOY sfiorerà anche impietosamente crudeltà e sgradevolezza ma non disdegna risonanze shakespeariane. Sceneggiatura ambiguamente manipolata su voyerusimo ed incesto, erotismo (occhio alla splendida Gang Hye-jung) ma pure lirismo, humour splatter e un Choi Min-sik (già formidabile nel capolavoro di Im Kwon-taek EBBRO DI DONNE E DI PITTURA) mostruosamente sopra le righe : " Devo amputarti la mano poichè hai sfiorato ii seni di Mido." - "E della mia lingua cosa te ne fai, allora?".
