Ecco le premesse a Triangle of Sadness.

Perché no, dopo tutto.

Ruben Ostlund is on the crest of a wave having received a second Palme d'Or at Cannes for Triangle of Sadness. This has not happened often, eight times alone since the creation in 1946 of the world's largest film festival. First to another Swede, Alf Sjoberg, then to Francis Ford Coppola, Japan's Shoei Imamura, Emir Kusturica, Bille August, the Dardenne brothers, Ken Loach and Michael Haneke.

Ostlund had already won the Fipresci prize at the Moscow Film Festival in 2004, two years later he was at the Certain Regard in Cannes, and in 2011 with Play he scandalised the critics by describing what had happened shortly before in Gotheborg.. A gang of black immigrant kids had been exploiting their white peers for a long time; but in an equivocal alternation between victims and persecutors...Finally Turist allowed him a new provocation: an avalanche surprised a Swedish family on holiday in the Alps on the threshold of a restaurant. With the head of the family having run away, heedless of the rest of the family.

In 2017, the first Palm, The Square. Altruism, a constant theme, still in the background of a satire, at times irresistible, on the universe of art. But alongside it, provocation is accentuated, in a film of almost three hours. The Nordic space, so rational, refined and lustrous, contrasts admirably with the desecration. Destined to result in fear and bitterness, in a particular tone, an expressive rigour in poking at the ambiguity of conformism, avoiding the familiar satire.

These are the premises of Triangle of Sadness. But the rigour has now dissolved into the two and a half hours of a kind of anti-capitalist farce tinged with an insistent, ill-concealed conceit. On the luxury yacht of the central episode, the model was probably one of Marco Ferreri's masterpieces, La grande abbuffata. We will come to this after the film's debut in the not exactly original universe of fashion shows. It is the cruise meeting of a group of multimillionaires and now rampant influencers, all destined to face a predictable shipwreck that will lead to the seemingly deserted island.

Why not, after all. Were it not for the fact that the quality of the filmmaker's gaze now transcends the tragicomic depiction of class struggles and existential shambles at every turn. It dissolves all sewage, in an outsized progression of metaphors, which from the latrine-like characters is swept up in the storm along with the film.
