A Golden Lion winner at the last Venice Film Festival, Anne's Choice - L'Evénement was not an easy film to make. Based on an autobiographical novel by Annie Emaux, set in France but far removed from the atmosphere of that cinema in the early 1960s, this fifth Venetian gold by a female director (after Agnès Varda, Mira Nair, Sofia Coppola and Chloé Zhao) delves deep into the character of 17-year-old Anne, a promising literature student preparing for exams and the possibility of a future as a writer.

Suddenly, however, Anne is confronted with an unexpected, dramatic event. An increasingly painful dilemma that in 1963, but at the same time in a feeling of growing contemporaneity that gradually transpires from the film, could cost her not only serenity and health. But prison.

The unusual emotion of the cinema of Audrey Diwan, a French-Lebanese in her second full-length film, does not stem only from her subject, which has been addressed many times but is still partially unresolved, such as clandestine abortion. It stems from her way of telling the story, all in the folds of a restrained energy. From a rigorous and courageous choice to remove, rather than add, superfluous details from his images.

As was already the case in her debut film, Mais vous êtes fous (2019), about a woman forced to choose between a husband and her children, it is in the immovable presence of her protagonists on the screen that Audrey Diwan manages to initiate the journey of introspection on the part of the spectator.

Thus, in the intense yet restrained vibration of the very young Anamaria Vartolomei, in her silences as well as in her cries, the film manages to express both the internal emotion of the character without obviating the violence of the physical emotion offered to her body. The closure of society towards her, the incomprehension of her family, the increasingly elusive estrangement that becomes peremptory among her friends as well as among her doctors, paints a path that remains in the mind. It is so painful because it is never shouted in the absence of pity
