Did Winston Churchill defeat Hitler, win World War II and save all humanity by starting to drink from breakfast in the morning? This is what the Danish director of FESTEN (Jury Prize at Cannes 1998) confirms with this provocation, the last (and one of the most concrete) of his always exuberant creations. Thomas Vinterberg then reminds us how the Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skarderud put into circulation the theory that human beings are born with an alcohol deficit of 0.5 grams per litre of blood. As a result, the four protagonists of DRUNK (recently awarded the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film) have every interest in replenishing (but not exceeding) their daily intake. First and foremost, the tedious history teacher Mads Mikkelsen (once again impeccable after 2012's THE HUNT). He needs only a few drinks when he wakes up to win back the interest and respect of his sleepy pupils thanks to his light but steady hangover.

Raging against political correctness has always seduced Vinterberg. Here he succeeds in doing so. But without falling too far into a certain predictability that the subject matter, as well as the filmmaker's undoubtedly talented track record, suggested. Tragicomic rather than sententious, consequently closer to his eventual model which can be sensed just around the corner (John Cassavetes' genial revelry in HUSBANDS with its unforgettable forty-year-olds) DRUNK succeeds for the Danish director. Without falling into the trap of easy moralism that threatens such a theme.

Vinterberg plays with fire by resorting to certain inserts that show the not unprecedented propensities of various experts on the subject such as Yeltsin, Clinton, Sarkozy or Brezhnev. But the light mixture of humour and bitterness with which he manages to blend his four characters makes the film close to the audience; closer than the significant but show-stopping work that preceded DRUNK in the Danish director's filmography.
