Tori et Lokita is first and foremost a true film. unspeakably human but almost forcibly concrete. Perhaps it could not be otherwise, given that it is the twelfth feature film in thirty years of a cinema of continuous moral generosity and enviable expressive coherence. But it is the topicality, the urgency of this story that immediately strikes us in this inflated era, trivialised by images.

Here, then, is a story as banal as it is cruel, like so many we might have in our sights. Tori is thirteen years old, and as an orphan recently disembarked from Benin, he already has his residence papers. Lokita, on the other hand, is already a teenager, but her application for asylum is struggling to be granted. It will be very difficult for the Belgian authorities to accept her as Tori's sister. Questioned by those in charge, in the first images of the film, we then see her surrounded by questions, by the siege of rules. A known and now sealed destiny from which she can only attempt to extricate herself.

The fraternal solidarity that is gradually established between the two will then have to face a whole series of trials. A baker, in the basement where only the deputy orders pizzas: for two pennies, sometimes a cold focaccia, he will force them to improvise as drug runners; not without demanding some sexual attachment. Then, the ferrymen who claim their due; and a mother who on the phone from Africa accuses her daughter of collecting her miserable pennies rather than sending them to her.

In the rigour with which the Dardenne accompany the disconsolate but sometimes playful daily life of the two young people, thanks to their accuracy in capturing the revealing details of environments, the echo of sounds, the uncertainty of the chiaroscuro in which the two young people evolve, an almost paradoxical balance ends up being constructed.

In the extraordinary naturalness that inhabits the two protagonists (the two newcomers Joely Mbundu and Pablo Schils are splendid, as often happens with authors), it then happens that the spectator almost clings to them; and to the otherwise almost programmatic series of adversities. A sort of affectionate, delicate complicity ensues, which ends up binding us to the disconsolate evidence of an impossible path. Impossible because it is clear from the outset that it cannot count on our consolation.
