Quella di rifare, dietro l'ausilio delle forse spettacolari (ma quanto insipide) panoramiche sulla favolosa natura australiana ripresa dall'elicottero, al tempo stesso VIA COL VENTO e C'ERA UNA VOLTA IL WEST, PEARL HARBOR e CROCODILE DUNDEE; il melodramma strappalacrime e la magia infantile de IL MAGO DI OZ, il fumetto dissacrante e il rinvio al metafisico con l'indigeno carico di saggezza ancestrale di LA MIA AFRICA che osserva dall'alto della collina.

Una presunzione che si stempera nella dimensione gigantesca di un'impresa che avrà pure i suoi estimatori, ma che non riesce mai a costruirsi su quello che avrebbe voluto essere un kitsch d'artista, fatto d'interminabili tramonti ed evocazioni musicali (il leitmotiv, figuriamoci, di “Over the Rainbow”). Strizzate d'occhio, quasi imbarazzanti nella loro impudenza, che finiscono inevitabilmente per coinvolgere l'impettita Nicole Kidman, preoccupata di assumere il piglio mitico delle Katherine Hepburn e Meryl Streep, e di un villoso Hugh Jackman, esitante fra il Clark Gable e l'Indiana Jones.
