Esattamente vent'anni fa, Jonathan Glazer, regista britannico già sulla cresta dell'onda, ci rendeva attenti con BIRTH, il suo secondo lungometraggio, Non soltanto grazie ad una interpretazione che già definivamo di sublime da parte dell'allora venticinquenne Nicole Kidman; ma in aggiunta, con l'ulteriore sorpresa della ricomparsa del mito redivivo di Lauren Bacall.

Thriller soprannaturale di quelli ancora in voga a Hollywood? BIRTH risultava essere piuttosto un oggetto misterioso, ambiguo, raffinato e pure sensuale. Egualmente sconclusionato. Ma dotato di  uno sguardo graffiante sull’upper class nuovayorkese; Inserito però nella sceneggiatura del pure bunueliano Jean-Claude Carrière che stentava terribilmente a tirare le somme.

La più innocente che morbosa Kidman s'invaghiva allora di un ragazzino undicenne che pretendeva di essere la reincarnazione del suo defunto marito... Certo, già c'era la fotografia glaciale del bravissimo Harris Savides di GERRY ed ELEPHANT ad alimentare uno sguardo entomologico su quella società affacciata su Central Park. Ma, mentre la sensibilità dilagante della Kidman si trasformava in commozione, le solitudini femminili della conclusione finivano per arrampicarsi sui muri.

Exactly twenty years ago, Jonathan Glazer, a British director already on the crest of a wave, made us attentive with BIRTH, his second feature film, not only thanks to an already sublime performance by the then 25-year-old Nicole Kidman; but in addition, with the added surprise of the reappearance of the rediscovered myth of Lauren Bacall.

Supernatural thriller of the kind still in vogue in Hollywood? BIRTH turned out to be rather a mysterious, ambiguous, refined and even sensual affair. Equally rambunctious. But endowed with a biting look at New York's upper class; embedded, however, in the screenplay by the purely Bunuelian Jean-Claude Carrière, it struggled terribly to pull off the upset.

The more innocent than morbid Kidman then fell for an 11-year-old boy who claimed to be the reincarnation of her late husband... Of course, there was already the glacial photography of the very talented Harris Savides of GERRY and ELEPHANT to fuel an entomological look at that society overlooking Central Park. But as Kidman's rampant sensitivity turned to emotion, the female solitudes of the conclusion ended up climbing the walls
