L'autore dello splendido INSEPARABILI (DEAD RINGERS), del meno perfetto IL PASTO NUDO (THE NAKED LUNCH) e del deludente M.BUTTERFLY ha scelto di buttarsi a capofitto in quelle tematiche che da tempo gli vengono attribuite di diritto: la fascinazione dei metalli, della carne, delle sue mutilazioni e soprattutto della sua ambiguità.

Ha scelto il noto romanzo di J.G. Ballard: nel quale l'eccitazione sessuale dei personaggi va di pari passo con quella - assai più discutibile - per gli incidenti d'auto... Ed ha composto una sorta di happening inteso come anticipatorio - certamente filmato in modo impeccabile - nel quale le due componenti vengono coniugate incessantemente.

Il risultato è clamorosamente esplicito, per una produzione americana solitamente preoccupatissima di non cadere nei fulmini - e soprattutto nelle restrizioni distributive - della censura: ma soprattutto bulimico. Infittendo a quel modo il proprio film di copule etero ed omo, oltre che di autovetture accartocciate per le ingombrantissime autostrade di casa sua, Con questo, Cronenberg ha ottenuto l'effetto contrario a quello probabilmente ricercato: la mortificazione di ogni effetto in un film costruito su un seguito di effetti più o meno stimolanti.

Cronenberg has achieved the opposite effect to the one he was probably looking for: the mortification of every effect in a film built on a sequel of more or less stimulating effects.
