Il film del 1939, il più grande fallimento finanziario della carriera di Renoir, forse il suo capolavoro più duro. Crudele e implacabile critica alla società borghese, la "regola del gioco" è quella che permette all'individuo di non essere stritolato dalla macchina della società. Il personaggio dell'aviatore, l'unico sincero e onesto, metterà un piede nell'ingranaggio e ne diventerà la vittima. Dopo di che, il gioco ricomincerà come prima. Renoir muove i personaggi di questo film pessimista e profetico (uscirà infatti, accolto dai fischi dei parigini, nei mesi immediatamente precedenti lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale) come le pedine di una costruzione perfetta. I caratteri dei personaggi e le loro vicende s'intrecciano e si concludono con una logica stupefacente, la loro collocazione nello spazio cinematografico è esattamente corrispondente a quella logica. Destino di tutte le opere in anticipo sulla loro epoca, è uno dei film del grande regista francese nei quali si sente una partecipazione totale, affettiva dell'autore. Come disse Truffaut: "Sarei incapace di citare un altro cineasta che abbia messo altrettanto di sé stesso - del migliore di sé stesso - di quanto abbia fatto Jean Renoir in LA REGLE DU JEU.

The 1939 film, the greatest financial failure of Renoir's career, is perhaps his harshest masterpiece.
